Ruby Konchar Obituary

Published by Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home on Oct. 31, 2016.
Ruby Louise (Tingler) Konchar was born to Clairel Rubble and Beulah Nixie (Robinson) Tingler on Monday, May 5, 1924. The weather was warming up and the last frost had just passed. Ruby was not their first child, nor would she be the last; but she was a beautiful gem, just like her namesake. Ruby basked in the warmth of her large family, where there was always room for one more at the table or in an already crowded bed. She left school to help support the family after her father became disabled. Ruby grew into a beautiful, hardworking young woman with a sense of responsibility and commitment. She bought her own car, learned to drive, and wasn't afraid to slip out with her sisters for a trip to the beer garden on all-you-can-eat spaghetti night. During WWII, she took a position at Weirton Steel, working beside her best friend Rose. On January 10, 1946, in Kinston NC, Ruby married Rose's brother, George "Porgy" Konchar . Back from the Pacific Campaign, Porgy was handsome in his Marine uniform, a bit raucous but charming once you got to know him. Their first child was born nine months later. Three more children would follow. Ruby learned the homemakers' craft of making ends meet. She could subtly speak her mind without ruffling feathers; she was fair and honest in her assessments, and she faced hardship head on. Ruby was a strong helpmate, from shaping her husband's political campaigns to building their home from scratch. Ruby inspired her children to discover their talents while instilling practical life values. She demonstrated through acts of love, faith and kindness that family is always first and that there are no excuses for not making the best of every moment you are given. After living a full life, Ruby passed away at home on October 31, 2016. She is survived by her children: Mary Konchar (Donna Scherer), Easton, MD; William (Rachael) Konchar, New Cumberland, WV; Eloise (Chris) Walker, York, ME; Marilynn Walker (Bill Gadd), Fairmont, WV; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild; sisters Edna (Tom) Flowers of Fresno, CA, Vera (Melvin) Crago of New Cumberland, WV and brother Clairel (Eileen) Tingler of Lyle, TN; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Konchar, great-granddaughter Leah Melissa Thompson, a son-in-law Hugh Walker; step-son George Miller, and sisters Adeline Sandy, Beulah Hauenstein, Ruth Chambers, Audrey Tice, Kay Barrett, and Verna Stewart. Friends will be received on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton, where Pomen Services will be held at 7:30 PM. Funeral Services will be celebrated at the funeral home on Friday at 11AM. V. Rev. Father Rade Merick will preside. Interment will follow at the Serbian Cemetery, Weirton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church, Valley Hospice or to a charity of one's choice. Ruby's family would like to extend a special thank you to Valley Hospice for their loving care.

Mary, William, Eloise and Marilynn I remember how kind your mother and father were to my mother and me when my father died. You lived next door to me at that time. I also remember how you children would gather on our back porch and talked with my mother and listen to her stories of years gone by. I'm sorry that I can not come to pay my respects in person but I have been having some health problems and was not able to travel to Weirton. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and you have my sincere sympathy. May God be with you during your time of grieving and always remember the good memories of your mother. From an old neighbor on Third Avenue in New Cumberland.

Dear Konchar family, thank you for sharing so eloquently about your beloved mother. I know both of my parents (George & Nancy Z) loved and respected her during the many years they were friends. I pray that God's peace and mercy will abide in you during the challenging days ahead. What a blessing that she was with you so long, may she rest in peace.

Learned so much from my great grandma Konchar, and I will miss my greatest teacher very much. She was a very intelligent, and loving at the same time, and nobody will ever make chicken soup like she could. I send my love and look forward to celebrating her life in West Virginia this weekend.
