Ruby McCrary Obituary
Ruby Jean (Lindsey) McCrary was born on August 17, 1935, in Akron, Ohio to William R. Lindsey, Sr. and Naomi Ruth Lindsey. She was the youngest of their five children.
Ruby attended Akron Public Schools and participated in several choral ensembles, and civic organizations and was a member of the local Girl Scouts of Akron. She went on to further her education studying at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
She absolutely adored her two children, Charles and Tanya Bethel, and worked extremely hard to nurture and encourage them to participate in the creative arts, music, local and national activities. She stressed the importance of attending and participating in church organizations and activities. Ruby was a very devoted daughter and caregiver of her parents throughout the years including organizing their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary.
A devout Christian, Ruby's loving spirit exuded great strength and resilience. She survived a life-threatening illness in 1963-64; her tenacity led her to successfully forge through recovery and raise her children.
Ruby began serving the Lord at Second Baptist Church, later joining Wesley Temple AME Zion Church in Akron, Ohio, and Lomax AME Zion Church in Detroit, Michigan. She was an active member of the Council of Churches in Akron, sang in choral ensembles and the chancel choirs, and served as a lifetime member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Missionary Society.
Throughout her professional career, Ruby was employed with Olson Electronics, Children's Hospital in Akron, Ohio, Merrill Lynch and the Wayne County Commission in Detroit, Michigan. Due to ongoing challenges, Ruby decided to retire, but continued to share her talents by working with the Children's Sunday School at Lomax AME Zion Church in Detroit, Michigan.
With the encouragement of her daughter, Ruby moved to Washington, DC on Saturday, November 8, 2014, where she resided until the Lord called her home on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth Lindsey; her son, Charles T. Bethel; a brother, William L. Lindsey, Jr.; and three sisters, Gazella Myers, Freda Lindsey and Sylvia Martin.
Ruby will forever be cherished by her devoted and loving daughter, Tanya J. Bethel; Tanya's godmother, Constance Speed (Ulysses Glen); four nieces, Cheryl Myers, Cecille Myers, Valerie Myers (Robert Ingram), and Leslie Martin; two nephews, Kevin Martin (Carrie) and Lester Martin; and a host of beloved extended family and friends.
The family owes its deepest appreciation to the caregivers and team at the Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home for the extraordinary services provided.
