The Colonel exemplified the true spirit of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and one who loved the truth. On many occasions we had the opportunity to fellowship with him and came to know him as a kind and gentle man who truly cared for people. He will be sadly missed and we look forward to seeing him in the Kingdom of God. Our condolences go out to the members of his family and pray that God will give them comfort at this time.

We will always remember the Colonel. He was a kind, gentle, and caring man. I recently asked him what he attributed his long life to and he looked a little surprised (as if to say how can there be but one answer)and answered with a hearty by God's grace,of course. We looked forward to seeing him each week at church and he will be greatly missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with you for your loss. Words are hard to find at times like this. Several years ago in 1991, I got the privilege to know the Col. I spent quite bit of time talking with him about the Air Force because I was an Air Force Brat. I also admired how he was so commited to taking care of his animals he had to feed in rain, sleet, snow or high water. Col. Lyster was a wonderful, compassionate, loving person and fine example to all he came to meet. I know that he was loved very much and will be greatly missed. It is comforting to know he is in the Lords hands. There is not be a better place to be. You are in our prayers that the Lord will give peace and comfort to all those who grieve the loss of their loved ones.

The 100th Bomb Group would like to express its condolences to the relatives of Col David K. "Handlebar Hank" Lyster. He was the longest serving 350 BS Commanding Officer. I had the pleasure of meeting him at both the reunions in Houston and in Pittsburgh. He was so helpful and enthusiastic to help our research and filled in many blanks in the groups history. He will be missed by all of us.

I remember Col. Lyster very well. We also arrived at the 100 in September 1944 and assigned to the 349th Sq. Each time I would see him I was amazed at that "awesome, beautiful, handlebar mustache". I think he waxed the ends which made him look so "debonair". As a new 2nd Lt. I was very impressed. Bless him.

We met the Colonel just last fall. We enjoyed listening to him tell of his service to this country. We send our warm wishes to his family, and know that he will be missed greatly.

Jan and family: We are the Aunt Sissy & Uncle J of which Kara Reyes mentioned...she is our great niece, and the Colonel adored her, as do we.

Words fail us when J and I attempt to put into words how much "The Colonel" meant to us. We met as church family and from there, our friendship blossomed into a loving and enduring relationship during these past 35+ years. He was compassionate and caring for those less fortunate, kind, gentle and always abided by the proper rules of etiquette. We treasure those memories of our travels together, both domestic and international--he was a great mentor!

He adored his family and was delighted to share the "good news" when a great-grandbaby was expected or when a grandchild acquired a college degree or other acts of achievement. He was always very proud, yet modest.

He will be missed, but never forgotten. We send our love and deepest sympathy to you and your family. He leaves a very meaningful legacy and was indeed a "hero" as you so lovingly described "your Daddy."

May God Bless and comfort you and your family in the days ahead.

What a wonderful gentleman your father was....always so polite and respectful to everyone, especially the ladies. The first time I ever remember meeting him, he came to my side at a funeral, introduced himself and we just talked as if we had known each other all our lives. His family, Church family, numerous friends and of course, the Air Force were his Pride and Joy. He will be missed, but more importantly he will be remembered.

I remember the Colonel, not only from him spending time with my Aunt Sissy and Uncle J, but from his trips to Sam's Club. He was one of my favorite members. He was always such a charmer, so sweet and caring. He will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
