Russell E. Haling of Hayward, WI age 92 passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024 at Water's Edge Care Center in Hayward. The son of William and Estella (Harris) Haling, Russ was born on March 13, 1932 in Mosinee, WI.
A proud veteran of the US Army, Russ enlisted at the age of 17 and attained the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He served in Korea, Cambodia and Viet Nam and was awarded two Bronze Stars and many commendations prior to his retirement in 1971.
Russ was active in the Hayward community, operated his own home building and real estate businesses and was dedicated to the Hayward Lions Club, serving as District Governor in the 1980s. He ran for State Senator in 1987. He was involved in the American Birkebeiner, the VFW and many other local organizations and causes. He also loved hunting, fishing, hiking and especially golf.
He is survived by his step-sons John Leary, Richard (Claire) Barnes and Steven (Ann Berlage) Barnes, and his step-daughter Cynthia (Barnes) (Dennis) Huey. He is further survived by his grandchildren Jackie Leary, Colleen (Leary) Kohlman, Brian Barnes, Megan Barnes, Natalie Barnes, Jennifer (Huey) Rosenberg and Brian Huey along with several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Lillian (Leary)Haling and her daughter Audrey Leary, his second wife Elizabeth (Barnes) Haling, and several half-siblings, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A private service honoring Russ' life will be held by the family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Spider Lake Church, Hayward Lions Club, Hayward VFW and Hayward Golf Club.
