I had the great good fortune of working with Russ as a fellow instructor at Famous Artists Schools in the late 1950's. Russ's brilliant first career as an artist-illustrator for Time and Sports Illustrated Magazines had diminished. In the hall outside our offices I listened to Russ's extraordinary, concise and poetic coffee break words and observations about everything. I didn't know it then, but they were prologue to "Riddley Walker" et al.

My deepest sympathies to the family of Russell Hoban. I grew up in the 60's and avidly loved reading the Frances books. I made sure to read these stories to my son as he was growing up. What a terrible loss.

Deepest sympathy to Mr. Hoban's family. I've still got my copy (okay, my older brother's copy) of Harvey's Hideaway and read it to my two children. Timeless tale. May your memories bring you comfort.

My son loved the Frances books and named his imaginary friend Frances after that friendly badger.

Harvey's Hideout has been my children's favorite book for years. I think that I can recite it word for word, after reading it so many times. Continue your great story telling in Heaven Mr Hoban, I hope to meet you there some day.

Mr. Hoban was a great writer whose loss will be felt by children all over the world. The Francis books gave me much joy as a child. My own children loved them as did the many children I have taught over the years. They dealt so well with children's quirks and issues.
