Russell Michael Oehring, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, in Temple, Texas, at the age of 79. Born on November 23, 1945, in Detroit, Russ was a man whose life was marked by dedication, love, and an admirable work ethic.
Russ was the beloved son of the late Russell Otto and Lucille (McGrath) Oehring. His life was a testament to the values instilled in him by his parents, which he passed on to his own family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Virginia, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring love. Together, they raised a family that includes their children Russell (Joann) Oehring, Rhonda (Scott) Harding, Terrell (Elise) Oehring, John O'Hare, and Patrice (John) Knapp. Russ was preceded in death by his infant son Nicholas, and his son, Thomas Oehring, whose memories remained a guiding light in his life.
Russ was a proud Navy veteran and a skilled boat mechanic, a career that allowed him to combine his love for the water with his remarkable ability to fix anything with a motor. His brothers, Richard, Robert, Gary, and Kyle Vanscoy, and sisters, Ruth (Tom) Ruperd and Theresa Bodus, will remember him as a man who was always ready to lend a hand or share a word of advice. Russ's legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the stories and lessons he shared.
An avid outdoorsman, Russ's interests included boating, archery, and playing darts. His fascination with trains was more than a hobby, and his passion for NHRA racing was second to none. Russ's ability to fix motors was legendary, and he was often referred to as the go-to 'handy' man in his community.
His life was one of active involvement and service. As a Navy veteran, he not only served his country with honor but also brought the same level of commitment to his civilian life. His work as a boat mechanic was not just a job; it was a calling that allowed him to help others while doing what he loved.
Above all, Russ's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was a man who took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams with the same determination that he did.
Russ is at McWilliams Funeral Home where the family will receive friends on Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 5pm-7pm.
