Russell Sawyer Obituary
Russell Edgar Sawyer, a beloved father, friend, and dedicated public servant, passed away at his home on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born in Donna, Texas on July 2, 1935, to Russell Meders Sawyer and Alice Erlene (Ivey) Sawyer.
Russell was a proud United States Navy Veteran who bravely served his country during three tours in Vietnam, exemplifying courage and commitment throughout his military career. After retiring from the Navy in 1979, as a Chief Petty Officer, he continued his service to the community by working for over 20 years with the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality (TCEQ), where he made a lasting impact on environmental stewardship and public health.
Russell earned his bachelor's degree from Texas A&M Kingsville, continuing his demonstration of a lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth. On December 24, 1961, Russell married the love of his life, Freda Lou Furr. They were married for 57 wonderful years, until her passing on April 5, 2018. Russell's legacy is defined by his devotion to family, his unwavering sense of duty, and his remarkable contributions to both his country and the state of Texas.
Russell was preceded in death by his loving wife, Freda Lou Sawyer; parents, Russell and Alice Sawyer; and brother, James "Jimmy" Aaron Sawyer.
He is survived by his two sons, Andrew Zeb Sawyer and Christoper Sawyer; and one grandson, Keegan Conran.
Services are scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the Three Rivers City Cemetery located at the corner of King David Road and North School Drive, Three Rivers, starting with a visitation at 11:00 am and a graveside service at 11:15 am. Russell will be interred next to his wife, Freda Sawyer.
