Russell "Russ" Herbert Sutton, Jr., 73, passed away on July 23, 2025 at Envive of Hartford City.
He was born in Hartford City on August 2, 1951 to Russell Herbert Sutton, Sr. and Violet Lucille (May) Sutton. His parents preceded him in death.
Russ took great pride in being an Airedale, graduating from Hartford City High School in 1969. He went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree from Taylor University in 1973, followed by a Master's Degree from Ball State University in 1978. From 1973 until his retirement in 2015, Russ dedicated himself to teaching social studies at Hartford City Junior High. Beyond the classroom, he devoted countless hours to coaching at both the junior high and high school levels. His unwavering commitment to Blackford Sports was evident-if he wasn't on the sidelines coaching, he was in the stands, cheering on the teams. In recognition of his impact, the new gym at Blackford Junior Senior High School bears his name as the Sutton Center.
Russ earned widespread respect from students, parents, and colleagues, making it no surprise when he was honored with the "Teacher of the Year Award." He never forgot his students or athletes, always taking joy in reconnecting with them whenever their paths crossed.
He will be sadly missed by his brother and sister-in-law, William "Bill" and Mary Kay Sutton of Aurora, IL; brother-in-law, Cassius "Butch" D. Mansfield of Russiaville, IN; aunt, Gladys M. teer of Hartford City; several nieces and nephews.
He is also preceded in death by his sister, Linda S. Mansfield.
Funeral service will be at 11 AM Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St., Hartford City. Burial will follow at Hartford City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 PM Tuesday, July 29, 2025 and from 9 to 11 AM Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Keplinger Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Blackford Bruin Athletic Boosters, 2392 North State Road 3, Hartford City, IN 47348
