Ruth Burrows Obituary

Published by Memorial Services of Iowa at Ankeny Memorial (MSI) on Sep. 6, 2018.
Ruth Burrows of Ankeny died Sept. 6, 2018 at Ramsey Village after a valiant fight against old age. Ruth was born Oct. 15, 1925 on the family farm outside Glen Haven, WI. She was the youngest of six children born to Matt and Anna (Ackermann) Vogt. Her father died when she was six. Raised during the depression, life was hard, but she had many great stories of "making due" with what they had. In 1946, Ruth traveled alone on the train to San Diego, CA to marry her high school sweetheart, Howard Burrows, who was in the Navy. After his service, Ruth and Howard, a mechanic/crane operator, lived in Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska where he worked on many bridges along I-80, I-35, and I-235. In 1962, they gave up their gypsy lifestyle and settled in Ankeny. She raised six children, wintered in Texas, and traveled far. She loved spending time with her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Howard's death in 1995, she made the senior center her second home, as she walked there every day until last year. In 2001, she was named Ankeny's volunteer of the year. Ruth loved to bake, especially during the holidays. Her molasses cookies were a family favorite. She loved candy, preferred dessert first, and believed pie was for breakfast. Ruth will be greatly missed by all. She is preceded in death by her husband Howard, two sons, John and Dale, her parents Matt and Anna Vogt, two brothers, Lawrence Vogt and LaVern Vogt, and two sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Winifred Kirschbaum. She is survived by four children; Karen Alexander, Tom Burrows, Steve (Patty) Burrows, and Howie Burrows, two daughter-in-laws, Muoi Burrows and Marilyn Burrows, 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and her dog, Maggie. A special thank you to Ramsey Village and St. Croix Hospice for the care and support they provided Ruth in the last leg of her journey.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the family. I was at the cemetery today putting flowers on my sister's grave and walked over to Howard's grave and was saddened to see a date by her name. What a wonderful kind genuine person she was. My sister found a very loving family when she married Howie and Matt. Take care.

I was sad to see that Ruth died. I didn't know her, but lived down the street. I used to see her walking, winter or summer to the community center. She turned down my offer for a ride one day because she didn't have that far to go. My condolences to your family and may she rest in peace.

Hello.
I do not recall ever meeting Ruth, she just seems so familiar to me. Years ago, we lived in Des Moines and we had relatives in Ankeny - Jeff and Mary Segin and their 3 children. When the flood of l993 shut down all the water in Des Moines, we had to come out to shower in Ankeny.
There is something so calming about Ruth's smile - she seemed so familiar to me.
God Bless and take good care.

Just wanted to tell you all how sorry I am to hear about your mom's passing. I visited with her daughter and son at Ramsey while I stopped to visit my mom. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Ruthie was the heart and soul of our senior center. I was lucky enough to work with her for almost 7 years. She thought me to remember my purpose . I am so thankful to have had her friendship. I thank her for helping me be who I am today.

Much peace my friend.

Love Maureen

Have so many memories of Ruth in the few years I had the priviledge of knowing her. Hard to believe she won't be returning to her home across the street again.

I was never able to meet Ruth, but I had frequent contact with her children when they would come visit her at Ramsey Village. Everyone has been saddened to hear of her passing and we will all miss visiting with her family members. Hold on to your memories and they will hold on to you.
