Ruth Barbour Compton, 87, of Greensboro, NC and Radford, VA, succumbed to Alzheimer's at her home at WhiteStone, A Masonic and Eastern Star Community. She was surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by her husband, Reynard Ray Compton; her son Brian Quintin Compton; her father, Oliver Grasty Barbour; her mother Mildred May Barbour; her brothers Hubert Lindy Barbour, Oliver Grady Barbour; and her sisters Hilda Mae Martin, Bertha Adeen Barbour. Mrs. Compton was born in Tazewell County, VA and is survived by her sister Kathy Barbour Ferguson of Elizabethton, TN; three children: son Bart (Bev) Compton of Chesapeake, VA, daughter Brenda (John) Compton Lech of Greensboro, NC, and son Aaron (Dawn) Compton of Lynchburg, VA; five grandchildren, granddaughter Sarah (Tom) Compton Wright, grandsons Tucker, Liam, David and Luke; great-grandsons Cooper and Mason; and many other loving relatives. Ruth was a loving mother, wife, grandmother and friend to all. Mrs. Compton was a proud member of Central United Methodist Church in Radford, VA for 40 years serving as youth sponsor, Finance Committee member, Parsonage Committee member and other roles when needed. She was also a member of Eastern Star MESH# 379 for over 13 years. She retired from Radford Furniture after many years as a bookkeeper. Mrs. Compton enjoyed being a bookkeeper from her late teenage years until her retirement. She took great pride in her work with numbers. Mrs. Compton believed raising her children and caring for her family was her first priority in life but found time for her church, her community and for helping others in need. Mrs. Compton's daughter thinks her mother is the most selfless person she's ever known. Bart agrees. A special thank you to the WhiteStone Community in Greensboro for their loving care and support over the past 14 years. The amazing people at WhiteStone not only took care of Ruth, but loved and supported Ruth's husband Ray and their family members. Funeral services for Mrs. Compton will be at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, VA where Mrs. Compton will be laid to rest, Friday, November 7, 2025, at 12 Noon. Following the service, the family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
