Ruth Couchey Obituary

Couchey, Ruth
BRUNSWICK - Ruth Caroline Horne Couchey, 95, of Essex and Brunswick, N.Y., beloved wife of the late Sidney "Sid" Couchey, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 10, 2025, after a long illness she bore with grace.
Ruth was born in Teaneck, N.J., to the late Wallace Horne and Ruth McElroy Horne Samson. She grew up in Pearl River, N.Y., and attended Nyack High School and the Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City, N.Y. She had a passion for children's ministry and worked with Children's Bible Fellowship on Long Island for many years. After she and Sid moved to Essex, she continued to teach kids about Jesus' love in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Ruth also worked for many years as a Teacher's Assistant at Willsboro Central School.
Her other love was music. Ruth was a member of both the Brunswick Presbyterian Church and the Essex Community Church choirs and several seasonal chorales, blessing many with her lovely soprano voice.
Ruth and Sid loved raising their family in Essex on the shores of Lake Champlain. Ruth was always the first in the water in spring and ice skated well into her 70s. Ruth had also been the summer Art Gallery Director in Essex with the Adirondack Art Association, where she and her husband were founding members.
Ruth was the loving mother of Brian (Suze) Couchey of Inman, S.C., and Laura (Anthony) Abate of Brunswick, N.Y.; cherished grandmother of Andrew (Becki) Couchey, Ben (Rachel) Couchey, Abbi (Ethan) Mabbit, James Couchey, Peter (Gabbi) Couchey, Lucas Abate and Cristian Abate; adored great-grandmother of Gideon and Penny Couchey, Winter, Valley, and Alice Mabbit, and Jac and Eliza Couchey. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Wallace Horne and Charles Horne; and sister, Kathy (Fred) Holton.
Funeral service will be celebrated on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., at the Brunswick Presbyterian Church, 42 White Church Lane, Troy, N.Y. 12180.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Morris-Stebbins-Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home, 312 Hoosick Street, Troy, N.Y. 12180.
Interment will be held in the Whallons Bay Cemetery in Essex, N.Y.
There will be a Celebration of Life at Essex Community Church in the summer, date to be determined.
Ruth's family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the Van Rensselaer Manor staff for their loving care.
