Ruth Hellestrae Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Simkins Funeral Home on Mar. 16, 2026.
Ruth Marie Hellestrae, 84, of Morton Grove, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

Ruth was born in Chicago, Illinois to Melvin and Violet Horning. She was the loving older sister of Elaine Horning, Betty (the late Ron) Daum and Roger (Cindy) Horning. Ruth met the love of her life, Dick Hellestrae, in Evanston, and their first date was at a Harlem Globetrotters basketball game-a story she fondly remembered throughout her life. Ruth and Dick were married on September 8, 1962, and made their home in Morton Grove, where they lovingly raised their family.

Together they welcomed four daughters in five years: Anne (Martin) Murray, Peggy (David) Kirkpatrick, Diana Hellestrae, and Karla (Mark) Stuart. Being a mother was Ruth's true calling, and her unwavering dedication, encouragement, and love for her daughters were evident throughout their lives.

Her greatest joy was being a grandmother to seven: Casey Murray, Meghan (Ian) Leigl, Kelly Murray, Colin Murray, Emily (Michael) Cascarano, Karl Kirkpatrick, and Ashlyn Marshall. They were the lucky recipients of card games, Yogi Bear camping trips, extra scoops of ice cream, and her constant love and adoration.

Ruth was also blessed with four great-grandchildren-Owen, Shea, and Finn Leigl, and Lucinda Cascarano-with another on the way. They always brought a smile to her face.

She will also be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends whose lives she touched with her warmth and kindness.

Ruth enjoyed crocheting, crafting, camping, and chatting. A deck of cards was never far from her reach, and she loved hosting gatherings with family and friends. A true night owl, Ruth could often be found staying up late enjoying conversation, laughter, and the company of those she loved.

Her family will remember her for her generous heart, her joyful spirit, and the love she shared so freely.
