Ruth Hohn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Alavon Direct Cremation Service - South Daytona on Jan. 14, 2026.
Ruth Ellen Scannell Hohn, 62, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away unexpectedly on January 5, 2026, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

She was born on July 19, 1963, in Pennsylvania, to Harold Leroy Scannell, Sr. and Norma Jean Scannell. She later made her home in Edgewater, Florida, where she built a life defined by hard work, perseverance, and deep love for her family.

Ruth was an extremely hard worker, known for her stubborn determination and strength. Despite her tough exterior, she was deeply humble and thoughtful, always thinking of others before herself. She did not judge others and accepted people as they were.

She was a God-fearing woman with a sharp sense of humor, who loved a good deal and found joy in life's simple pleasures. Her kindness was quiet but constant, and her love for her family was unwavering.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Leroy Scannell, Sr. and Norma Jean Scannell; brothers, Charles Krepp, Robert Scannell, and Scott Scannell; and beloved daughter, Anna Marie Umstead. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Lafferty, and son-in-law, Lowell Lutz; brother, Harold Leroy Scannell, Jr.; sisters-in-law Jennifer Scannell, and Wendy Scannell; and by the grandchildren she loved so very much: Madison Lafferty, Isabell Umstead, Landon Lutz, Mila Lutz, and Liam Lutz. She was also a devoted great-grandmother to Ryker Bowden, Rayden Bowden, Stella Umstead, and Luna Lutz, and she cherished the joy of recently learning that another great-grandchild is on the way. She is also survived by her extended family, all of whom she loved and cherished deeply.

A family hosted Celebration of Life will be held on January 31, 2026, from Noon to 3:00 p.m. at Mary DeWees Park, 200–218 N. Gaines St., Oak Hill, Florida 32759. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ruth's life.

Ruth's legacy of strength, humility, compassion, faith, and unconditional love will live on through her family and all who were blessed to know her.
