Ruth Knoll Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shimon Funeral Home on Nov. 10, 2023.
Ruth Adelle Knoll passed away peacefully on November 8, 2023 while listening to Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah," a favorite oratorio. Ruth was born in Oconomowoc, WI on September 17, 1936 to William F. and Ruth Lucile (Johnson) Knoll, both of whom preceded her in death. Ruth is survived by many cousins on both the Johnson and Knoll sides of her extended family. The students and choir members who Ruth cared about are countless.
Ruth was the Choral Director at Hartford High School from 1958 to 1998 and involved in voice lessons, solo-ensemble contests, and musical theater productions. Her Hartford High School Concert Choir performed twice with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. She received the Herb Kohl Fellowship for excellent teaching in 1991.
In addition, she founded the Hartford Community Chorus in 1960, which continues to this day with performances in the Ruth A. Knoll Theater in the Schauer Center, as well as at Holy Hill with up to 100 voices. The City of Hartford proclaimed December 12, 2010 as "Ruth A. Knoll Day" and presented her with a key to the City.
Ruth appreciated all aspects of the arts, the beauty of nature, and sitting on the deck of her childhood home on Lac La Belle in Oconomowoc watching the changing aspects of the lake as dusk would settle upon the earth.
Visitation for Ruth will be on Saturday, November 18th, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church of Hartford, Wisconsin at 738 W. Monroe Avenue, Hartford, Wisconsin from 10 am until 12:45 pm followed by a 1:00 service. Burial will be Monday in the La Belle Cemetery, 700 E. Grove Street, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. A celebration of Ruth's life will be planned at a later date with opportunities to share memories and enjoy music.
*Ruth's funeral service will be live-streamed on the First United Methodist Church Facebook Page.* Please access church link below. Thank you

I met Ruth in 1977 when my family were members of The Methodist Church. I was in Junior High. Once I got to high school, she was my chorus teacher. I was heavily involved with chorus with madrigals, solo/ensemble, etc. I helped with Swing Choir & Concert Choir. She was such a huge part of my life during my high school years. She cared so much about her students. She thought of us as her kids. She lived her life to the fullest. Christmas parties at her home were amazing! I have thought of her so often since leaving high school 40 years ago. I will miss her deeply. Heaven has gained an amazing angel.

I first met Ruth when I was in 7th grade back in 1963. I was in chorus and then Concert choir (only it wasn't called concert choir then) until graduation in 1969. A memory I'm proud of is we were the 1st high school choir she had that she felt was strong enough to do selections from The Messiah. It was so exciting. And later in the Community Chorus we did a performance of Elijah. I also was so impressed that for a Memorial Day performance she chose 2 Bob Dylan songs. I learned to love all kinds of music that has lasted my lifetime. Thank you Ruth Knoll
