Ruth Martel, 89, formerly of Medina, ND died Monday, September 9, 2024 at Missouri Slope Skilled Nursing in Bismarck, ND.
Ruth was born August 7, 1935 the daughter of Ernest C. and Mary (Hins) Martel. She grew to womanhood in the area, attending grade school and graduating from Medina High School.
She and Preston Metzler where married August 7, 1954, they made their home in Wyoming where they had two children. They later divorced, at which time she moved to Williston, ND where she worked in the office at Perez Salt Mine. She then moved to Denver where she worked for the State of Colorado. In 2005 she moved back to Medina, until 2022 when she transitioned to the Missouri Slope Nursing Home in Bismarck.
Ruth loved her church, UCC of Medina, working in her flower gardens, reading, crossword puzzles, old movies, and Fox News. Ruth’s cats were her babies.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Jocelyn Guthmiller, Medina, ND; 4 grandchildren Jeremy, Derek (Nicole), and Kirk Guthmiller; 4 great grandchildren Kruz, Jordan, and Seth Guthmiller, and Journey Ennen; and 4 siblings, Dorothy Mahoney, Richard Martel, Marvin (Donna) Martel, and Linda (Dean) Jose, all of Bismarck, ND; a very special nephew and niece Rory and Kim Hoffmann and many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 children Kirk Metzler & Lavonne Metzler; 1 grandchild Preston Metzler and 4 siblings, Rosie (Frank) Bohn, Harold (Annette) Martel, Jacqualine (Rudy) Hoffmann, and Delores (Johnnie) Mittleider. Son-in-law Delton Guthmiller, Brother-in-law Thomas Mahoney, sister-in-law Pat Martel, several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Ruth requested memorials be sent to the United Church of Christ in Medina.
