Ruth Suroski Meade, 61, of Pearisburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in Hot Springs, Virginia.
Born June 6, 1964, in Bath County, Virginia, Ruth was the daughter of the late Edward “Eddie” Suroski, Jr. and Virginia “Ginny” Suroski. She was raised in Pembroke, Virginia and graduated from Giles High School, Class of 1982. In 1983, she married her husband, Walter Garland Meade, a marriage that would span more than four decades.
Ruth was a woman of determination and quiet strength. She was the first in her immediate family to attend college, earning a degree in Computer Science from New River Community College in Dublin, Virginia. She went on to build a more than two-decade career at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine as the Large Animal Department Head assistant on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, where she was respected and appreciated by colleagues and friends alike.
She found joy in life’s simple beauties—flowers blooming in the spring, butterflies drifting through the Giles County breeze, and the company of those she loved most. Above all, Ruth cherished her family and the memories they shared together.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Hollie Elizabeth Meade.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Walter Garland Meade; daughters Crystal (Eric) McCallister and Tiffany (Matt) Blankenship; grandchildren Kaileigh (James) Peer, Dacoda Lucas and (her father Cody Lucas), and Hallie McCallister; siblings Danny (Samantha) Suroski, Kathy Suroski, Carl (Pam) Suroski, and Mike Suroski; nieces and nephews Anthony Woodyard, Thomas Woodyard, James Suroski, Brett Suroski, Gary Suroski, Eric Suroski, and Sara Suroski; her aunt Nelda Clarke; special friends Linda Price and Donna Ford; and many other cousins, friends, neighbors, and colleagues from Virginia Tech who will miss her dearly.
In the summer of 2021, Ruth suffered a medical event that left her in need of full-time medical care. During a time when the COVID-19 pandemic made placement in care facilities incredibly difficult, The Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs, Virginia welcomed Ruth with open arms. The family is deeply grateful for the exceptional compassion and loving care she received there during the final four years of her life. The family also wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to ACG Hospice for their kindness and dedication in ensuring Ruth’s comfort and dignity during the final chapter of her life’s journey.
The family will receive friends at a time of visitation on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gary Poff officiating. Per her wishes, Ruth will be cremated following the service and later interred with her beloved daughter, Hollie. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Ruth’s memory are encouraged to make a donation to a charity of their choice in her name or plant a garden this spring with flowers that attract butterflies—one of Ruth’s favorite simple joys.
