Ruth Valiga Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home on Feb. 10, 2026.
Ruth Ann Threnhauser Schreiner Valiga passed away on February 9, 2026, at the Valley Hospice Care Center North.

Born on December 22, 1929, in Steubenville, Ruth Ann was a daughter of Frank Joseph and Mary Neill Threnhauser. She grew up alongside her beloved siblings Carolyn, John Robert, Francis Joseph (Trenie), and Jean, at their family home on Linden Ave.

A proud graduate of Big Red High School, Class of 1947, Ruth Ann embarked on a professional journey that began as a secretary for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. On August 25, 1950, she married Joel Stephen Schreiner, and soon after, embraced her role as a devoted mother to her beloved children, Melissa Himes and Joel Scott Schreiner.

In 1966, Ruth Ann returned to the workforce as a licensed real estate agent with Tony P. Sellitti during the construction phase of Country Club Estates, transitioning through various firms, including Walt Lint Realty and Mortimer Realty, eventually concluding her 60-year career with Howard Hanna Mortimer Realty at the remarkable age of ninety-five. Her successful career exemplified her dedication, strength, and commitment to excellence.

Beyond her professional achievements, Ruth Ann was a vibrant pillar of her community. Her volunteer work reflected her deep commitment to helping others, as she actively contributed to organizations such as the Women's Auxiliary of Weirton General Hospital, an advisor to the Junior Auxiliary, and the Candy Stripers. She was a member of the annual Pink Cotillion Ball Committee and served on the BOLT Board in the late 1970s. Decades of service on the Board of Directors for the Weirton Salvation Army earned her a lifetime membership, a testament to her enduring spirit of service.

Following her husband's sudden death in 1982, Ruth Ann was introduced to Michael D. Valiga, a widower who lost his dear wife Emily in 1983. They eloped to Williamsburg, VA., and were married in Wren Chapel at William and Mary, on August 13, 1985. They were a stunning couple who enjoyed serving and attending Cove United Presbyterian Church. They traveled to visit Mike's family in South Carolina, enjoyed many combined family vacations to Hilton Head Island, bus adventures with Three Score, and cruises to Hawaii, Alaska, and the Panama Canal.

Ruth Ann was a God-send to Mike as he battled Alzheimer's until he died in 2013.

Ruth Ann's life will be celebrated by family, friends, colleagues, and clients whom she loved.

Survivors include her son Joel (Terri Figlioli) Schreiner, daughter Melissa (Brian) Himes, grandchildren Danielle (Aaron) Blevins, Joel and Jared Schreiner and their mother Denise Calvert (Mike) Kubacka, Marlee and Kayla Gross, step-daughter Michelle (David) Young, grandchildren Shannon (Scott) Patterson, and Marc (Taylor) Young, and great-grandchildren Quinn, Piper and Jack Blevins, Rowyn Figlioli, Emily, Anna Claire, Alexis Patterson, Kennedy and Colton Young, and brother-in-law Nick and (Debyn) Mamula.

Ruth Ann loved children and was honored to be included as Grandma in a number of families who included her in birthdays and holiday celebrations.

Jennifer McVay, daughter of Ken and Mary McVay, held Grandma Ruth's hand until her last heartbeat. Brian (Lindsey) McVay hosted many picnics at their house in St Clairsville, creating heartfelt memories.

Friends are invited to visit Ruth Ann's family at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, on Saturday, February 14, from 11 am until the time of her 1 pm Funeral Service.

Burial will follow immediately in Union Cemetery.

Pastor Liana Glenn will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth Ann's memory to the Weirton Salvation Army, 794 Cove Rd, Weirton, 26062, or Never Alone, 263 Bell Blvd. Weirton, WV, 26062.

Ruth Ann was a second mother and mentor to many others, too numerous to mention. The family looks forward to sharing your fond memories of their mother during her visitation.
