Dear Karlin and family,
as you know in 2000, Gabe did a sabbatical in Andy Jackson's lab at UC-Berkeley, where I was a postdoctoral scholar. Before returning to the University of Kentucky he recommended that I apply for a tenure-track virologist position in the Plant Pathology Department that had opened upon the retirement of Dr. Tom Pirone. I followed his advice, and the rest is all that has happened since our arrival in Lexington. In addition to science, we had a great many conversations about family, which he cherished above all else. His gracious demeanor, and ever-present smile, will be missed by all. Together with Angelika, Sophia, and Joshua, I wish to express our deepest condolences, and to let you know that Gabe will forever be in your hearts.

So sorry to learn that Gabe has passed away. It was a privilege having known him. He was an insightful and gentle person, good friend and a valued colleague. I much cherished our lunch time discussions in the department when I was on sabbatical at UK. My deepest sympathies to all his family.

I am very sad to hear Dr. Ghabrial has passed away. I was a postdoc in his lab and he helped me a lot, not only with my research, but also with my living in US. I respected him and missed him very much. I am a professor in Northwest A&F university in China. I am trying my best to train and help my students, like Dr. Ghabrial had trained and helped me.

Karlin,
I am so sad to hear of the passing of Said and I want to offer you my deepest condolences. I have many fond memories and I always looked forward to chatting with Said at ASV meetings, and this for many years. We both had hearing issues and I remember us meandering through noisy meeting sites to find a quieter corner where we could discuss. We talked many times of collaborating on comovirus projects and although it did not materialize, it was always fun to think about. More recently, I had the pleasure of working with him on the ICTV executive committee from 2012 to 2014. It was also during those ICTV meetings that I also got to know you. I cant believe that he is gone. I have lost a friend and a colleague and the scientific community has lost a leader and mentor.

Dr. Ghabrial was always warm and welcoming. He always had a smile on his face. He just shared me an article he published 3 weeks ago and now I still cant believe he passed away. I am sure I will be missing him. There is a message from Taiwan that Dr. Chung-Chi Hu is sorry to learn this sad news and he want to convey his sincere condolences to the Ghabrial family.

Said was both an internationally respected scientist, and a gracious and gentle man. What a wonderful model he was for us in his orbit! Isn't it so human to not realize how special someone is until they are gone? I always liked and admired him, but today, I realize how wonderful he was as a colleague and fellow department member.

I am so sorry to learn of Gabe's passing, as are all of the department and others in the university who knew him. Gabe was an immensely important and deeply loved member of our faculty and our department community. He always prioritized his mentoring and educational missions, and trained many excellent scientists. He served as an outstanding mentor to me when I started here, and likewise to other new faculty in the department. He and Karlin have always been most warm and welcoming.

Dear Karlin, I am so sad, my heart hurts for you and your children. I cherish the happy memories of our "young" years. I can hear Said now, and see his smile. I see him driving back and forth to the lab every day..... Said was a good man.
You, Amin, Leila, and Nadia are close in my heart today.
