Sally Westergaard, 86, passed away peacefully at the Avera Sister James Hospice House in Yankton, SD surrounded by her family on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Sally Ann Orr was born on December 6, 1938 to Roland (Bud) and Eileen (Ovesen) Orr at their home in rural Vermillion. Sally attended Spring Hill School and graduated from Wakonda High School in 1957. Sally attended St. Vincent Nursing School in Sioux City, IA. She graduated in1960 with a RN degree.
Sally married Ralph Westergaard of Irene, SD on April 8, 1961 at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church.Together they farmed and appreciated the country living in the Wakonda area for forty years. As a couple, they started a small business in 1990 “Flags Unlimited”, selling flags and flagpoles. In 2000 they moved to an acreage east of Vermillion and eventually settled in town.
Sally stayed home and raised their children for several years. Later she returned to her nursing career, working 25 years at the nursing homes in Wakonda and Vermillion and the Yankton/Vermillion Medical Clinic before retiring in 2006.
Sally enjoyed Christmas Eve spending time with her family, siblings and their families. Sally enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow and attending their school events and being aunt to many nieces and nephews. Together Sally and Ralph enjoyed many trips to Branson MO. and sharing time with family and friends was a special time.
Sally loved sharing her life with Ralph for 62 years. Sally is survived by her son Matt (Tammy) of Sioux Falls, twin daughters Sue Tausch of Canton, SD and Beth (Robert) Millage of Yankton, SD and a son Mark (Loralyn) of Wakonda, SD. Proud grandmother of: Isaac (Emily), Lily, Leah Westergaard, Erica Tausch, Tyler (Caitlin), Travis (Amanda) and Trace (Fran) Millage, Austin (Megan) Campbell, Zechariah and Noah (Ciera) Westergaard and two great grandchildren: Wrenley and Rhett Millage, her sister, Mary Ellen (Todd) Brevik, sisters-in-law Gwen and Beverly Orr, brother-in-law Mike Koupal.
Sally was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, parents Bud & Eileen Orr, brothers Frank and Ron Orr, nephew Jim Orr & great niece Kelcy Orr, her infant grandson Josiah Westergaard.
