Salome “Chale” O. Torres, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather to-be, brother, uncle, and friend entered into the kingdom of heaven peacefully on August 13th, 2024 at the age of 91. He passed away at Rockport Rehabilitation and Nursing Home facility joining his beloved wife Andrea Zavala Torres. Salome was born in San Benito, Texas on October 23rd, 1932 to Higinio & Felicita Torres. He was a proud life long resident of Rockport, Texas

Chale was an exceptionally hard worker and provider for his family. As a young child, he helped support his family by working alongside his dad and family in the cotton fields. As a young husband and father, he worked for Emory Spencer and Bracht’s lumber yard. To supplement his family income, he was a part time landscaper. He retired as a painter working for painting contractors in the Rockport community. To several of the residents and businesses of Rockport that he did landscaping work and painting, he was known as "Charlie". He also worked at Live Oak Country Club for several years maintaining the golf course. When a family member or friend needed a helping hand, Chale would make himself available to help regardless of the time of day. He was a very caring and giving person, always willing to help others. He always enjoyed family gatherings where he had great times with his brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws. In addition, he always enjoyed the conversations he had with his nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was no surprise to his family that he would try to continue his everyday tasks even after suffering a massive stroke in 1998. He loved reading the Rockport Pilot that he subscribed to twice a week to keep in the know about his community.

Chale had an infectious smile and a giving heart. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life. Whether it was their birthday, graduation, or Christmas, he always wanted them to know that they were being thought of. Although Chale was not able to attend Mass every Sunday, he did receive the Eucharist every Sunday from his granddaughter Holly Waxman. He especially enjoyed feeling like he was part of the congregation when he received his weekly church bulletin at the nursing home. We thank Sacred Heart Church for providing their shut-in services.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Mary Ellen (Jeff) Schmidt of Corpus Christi, Texas, Charlie (Carmen) Torres of Pflugerville, Texas, Patricia Torres, Janie Smith, both of Rockport, Texas and Jose Angel Torres of Corpus Christi, Texas. Nine grandchildren, Holly, Patrick, Michael, Andrew, John, Valerie, Nicolas, Steven, and Jasmine. Thirteen great-grandchildren, Ryan, Mia, John, Audrey, Nicolas “Nico”, Emily, Lola, Julian, Maria, Cristian, Nicolas Beau, Isabel, and Hunter. Chale was excited to hear that his first great-great-grandchild would be arriving in February 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents, Higinio & Felicita, wife Andrea, siblings Natalia, Juanita, Petra, Facundo, Trinidad, Jose Angel, and Jose Higinio, daughter Maria Juanita, and grandson Zachary Cass Schmidt.

On behalf of the Torres Family, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the personnel and staff at Rockport Rehabilitation and Nursing Home Facility and Harbor Hospice.

Visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2024, at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Rockport, Texas. Rosary will be recited at 7: 00 p.m.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Rockport, Texas. Interment will follow at Rockport Cemetery.
