Sam Scala, 78, of Downers Grove, formerly Melrose Park, Illinois, passed away on January 10, 2026.

Born on December 31, 1947, Sam dedicated his life to family and public service. He proudly served the Village of Stone Park for many years, rising through the ranks to become Chief of Police, a role he held with integrity, fairness, and deep commitment to the community.

Sam met the love of his life, Rosanna, and together they built a large, close-knit family. He was a devoted father to Maria (Joe) Pieranunzi, Angelo (Diana) Scala, Rosa (Mario) Florio, and Sam Jr. (Joellen) Scala, and a proud grandfather to his 15 beloved grandchildren: Analisa, Mia, Isabella, Mario, Santino, Luca, Ava, Giuliana, Sammy, Antonella, Antonio, Francesca, Angelo, Valentina, and Mila. Sam was a cherished brother to the late Jude Scala and a devoted brother-in-law to Fiorella Auriemma, Bill Auriemma, Salvatore (Donna) DeSimone, and the late Mimma (the late Don) Ralls. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a constant companion to his beloved dog, Scooter, who rarely left his side. Sam was surrounded by a loving extended family and many dear friends. His steady presence, strong values, and dedication to those he loved will never be forgotten.

Lying in State, Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church 1101 23rd Ave., Melrose Park, IL 60160 from 10 a.m. until the Funeral Mass begins at 12 p.m. Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
