Samuel Adrian Baugh in my opinion was the greatest NFL Player of All Time! And he is and always will be my favorite NFL player. I've been remember cheering for the Washington Redskins when I was 8 years old, so for 40 years now I've been a fan. As a teen I read books on the history of the NFL and I was in awe of Sammy's role not only because in Redskins history, but his role in NFL history & the game of American football! Basically the father of the forward pass! His iron toughness, playing QB, Safety & Punter! Along with his humor made it easy to fall in love with Sammy! Ed Sabol, Steve Sabol & the voice of John Facenda assisted in bringing to life the life and career of Slinging Sam right before my eyes! The Greatest Redskin of them all 1937 - 1952, I knew it then, as a teen, that when I grow up and get a job, I'm going to get me a NFL jersey, but it's not going to be a modern players jersey of the late 80's, 90's, 2000's or beyond, No! My 1st NFL Jersey will be a Washington Redskins #33 Baugh Jersey! And that's exactly what I did back in 2017! I wear it with pride on game days and was even told by an old timer on one Sunday years ago as I walked into a local sports bar wearing my #33 Baugh Jersey.....He replied "Now you know your a real Redskins Fan when you wear a Sammy Baugh Jersey in here"....and matter of fact I am a real Redskins fan an a real Sammy Baugh fan as well! Slinging Sam, I never met you, but I wanted to! I was actually looking into taking a trip to Rotan Texas in 2008 when I read the news of your call to that great gridiron in the sky! My heart was broken, I shed tears, but then realized that Legends never die. So Samuel Adrian Baugh, I'd like to say even though I never met you, I love you. My condolences go out to the entire Baugh family, and friends who felt the loss of this Legendary figure in their lives. Sincerely Troy D Moore.

I have just completed my 48th season as an NFL addict and was lucky enough to be an occasional pen pal of Steve Sabol. The only thing that made losing Steve so young bearable was knowing that he would surely be greeted on the other side by the man he considered to be one of the very greatest football players of all time and just as good a man in all aspects of his life---Sammy Baugh

In Heaven, God will restore Sammy to the legendary days of his strong and vibrant youth. There will be new victories for a man life never defeated, only the time expired. God Bless you again Sammy. You were one of a kind.

My deepest sympathy to your family. In times such as these, I often find comfort in the Holy Scriptures. Psalms 55:22 says for us to throw our burdens upon Jehovah God and he will sustain us. Also, we gain encouragment from John 5:28&29 where we are given the hope of seeing our loved ones again. I hope you can find the comfort you need from God's word the Bible.

Dear Baugh family, some of my fondest memories of working with Stephen Baugh for 15 years was the sharing of family stories. My heart is sad that we have lost a legend and you have lost your patriarch. Enjoy all of those special memories of good times past. May each of you be comforted by the love, thoughts, and prayers of friends.

Dear Mrs. White... I just wanted to send out my condolences to you during this difficult time... I don't know if you remember coaching me so long ago in jr high school and sharing many memories with Cody as we grew up in Rotan, with Jennifer, Terry Jane and the whole Rotan bunch. I remember one time in particular going out to your Dad's when Cody was in high school and getting in plenty of fun trouble...lol... Your dad was always cutting it up and having a good time...Especially at Hoss's having coffee. That's how I will always remember him just a good old boy and legend in his own right. I just want you to know that I'm thinking of you during this difficult time and am praying for you and the rest of your family continually.

Slingin' Sammy Baugh was the kind of athelete all of us wanted to be. He was also the example for many to follow and will be from now on. Thank you for the many years of enjoyment on the football field. Rest in peace gentle giant and may God grant you family comfort and peace.

My memories of Sam go way back since I grew up in Rotan, I met him at a young age and instantly admired him. To a little skinny kid in the country of West Texas he was more than a great football player. He was also a very good roper. We got to see him rope not play football but he was always willing to show how he could throw a football or kick.
May God be with his kids and grand kids in this time. I know you will miss him as many of us will. So to Tod, Stephen, David and Francis my heartfelt sympathy
Eddie Thomas.

To the Baugh Family, I extend my sincere sympathy.
Sammy was a hero of my youth growing up in Sweetwater. One of my most thrilling moments came in the mid forties when my dad and I met Sammy in a cafe. Dad, Clay Reeves, was a year ahead of Sammy in high school and knew him from those years. I peeked out from behind Dad, for I was very shy in the presence of this great man, and accepted his slingin' hand to shake. Thanks, Sammy, for all the excitement that you brought to fans of all ages and the pride that you brought to our community.

I'm proud to have a degree from TCU and know that you went there too and won a National Championship in 1935. You were truly an original and one of the greatest athletes to ever play any sport. RIP fellow Horned Frog!

Growing up in Ft.Worth and down the street from TCU it was impossible to not know about Sammy Baugh. He really was 50 years ahead of his time. In my mind he is the Babe Ruth of NFL quarterbaks. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

To Buddy's children......As children my brother (Dale), sister (Beverly) and I visited the ranch. We're cousins, our grandfathers were brothers. Your dad was such a delight whenever I called him and it was always a great source of pride when someone would ask if I was related to the GREAT Sammy Baugh.

My sincere sympathies to the Baugh family from a life-long Redskins fan living deep in "enemy territory" (Dallas) I know that Texas and the Washington Redskins were in his heart long before there ever was a rivalry and Washingtonians will always be grateful to "Slingin' Sammy!" I'm proud to be a TCU alumnus because of all-time greats like Sam Baugh. Tiny TCU on the Fort Worth prairie received nationwide acclaim in the 1930s because of Sam's exploits. Your legend will not be forgotten.

My family is from Rotan,Texas and they always talk of their hometown hero. My Aunt used to work for Sam Baugh and my dad tells me stories of playing at his house when he was young. We were just there 2 weeks ago, and drove down Sammy Baugh Blvd. Our prayers go out to your family.

In 1966, I went to work in Temple's Santa Fe Hospital. Coffee break conversation always focused on football, and the old timers often seemed to bleed TCU purple. Wondering why, I soon found that those older Templeites still claimed ownership of Sammy Baugh, and they always spoke of him with extreme reverence.

Yet, For my wife his legend transcends football. Robert Duvall once implied that Baugh was the prototype for his character, Gus, in the Lonesome Dove saga. She "loved" Gus, so I guess Sammy Baugh by inference. If Duvall's suggestion about his Gus protype is true, both he and Baugh have done much to perpetuate forever what we Texans consider to be true Texan prototypes.

I was about ten years old when Sammy retired, but I have heard about him all my life. May he rest in peace, and comfort. That will be something that the NFL never made provisions for, for the players of Sammy's era. Thank You so much Sammy for your contribution not just to football, but to life in general. You will always be remembered. Bob(Jacksonville, Florida)

In 2006, while researching my Apple Family Tree, I visited my Dad's cousin, Harold Apple, in Sweetwater, Texas. Harold showed me a 1999 photo of him and his friend, Sam Baugh. Harold was so proud to know Sammy and told me all about his famous friend. Harold passed away that same year - he and his famous friend will visit again.

The greatest QB of all time. Had also
signed a baseball contract with the
St Louis Cardinals. Decided after one
year his future was in Football. I was
thrilled we were able to retire his TCU
number. I will always appreciate
Milton Hamm for helping to make that
happen. Rest in peace Sam.

I was born in 1948 so I never got to see Mr. Baugh play in person, but my father did and he insists Sam should have won the Heisman. My son gave me an autographed picture of #33, and it holds a place of honor as one of my most treasured TCU memorabilia items. We Horned Frogs have lost a legend.

My condolences to Mr. Baughs family. Growing up I herd his name mentioned from sports announcers often. He was well known around the other football teams fans just as well as the Redskins fans. A legand. A true pioneer in the game of football in every since of the word. But more than a football player, a gentleman. "You'll be sadly missed Sammy, but never forgotten."
