Samuel Marvin Giles, age 71, passed peacefully in his sleep on October 2, 2022, at his residence. He was born in Danville on September 10, 1951, to Billy Lee Giles, Sr. and Beatrice Kidd Giles. Sammy was married to Myrtie Pittmon Giles. He graduated from Chatham High School in 1969. Sammy was blessed to spend his entire life on his family's farm where he raised tobacco, grains, and cattle. He was a staple in the farming community having served on Pittsylvania County's Soil and Water Conservation Board for more than 20 years. He was faithful to attend worship services at The Jesus Gathering on White Oak Mountain.
Sammy leaves behind his wife of almost 50 years and three children: Jennifer Oakes (Matt), Samuel Giles, II (Kasey), and Natalie Hudgins (Jon). He was most proud to be "Gramps" to Bailey, Cole, Leah, Jacob, Haley, Jackson, Charlotte, Lacey and Weston. Sammy is survived by his brother Billy L. Giles, Jr. and sisters, Pat Woodson (Bobby) and Gayle Thomson (Jack). Also left to cherish memories of him are many nieces and nephews and his Pittmon family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Allen Giles and sister-in-law Nina Atkinson Giles.
A celebration of Sammy's life will be held on Wednesday, October 5 at 2:00pm at The Jesus Gathering on David Giles Lane in Blairs with Pastor Mark Redd and Stanley Owen officiating. Internment will follow at Giles Family Cemetery on West Giles Road. The family is receiving visitors at the residence.
