Sammy Marshall Joyner, Jr., a loving father, devoted grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away on May 18, 2025, after a day spent surrounded by family. Born on May 22, 1942, in Richmond County, North Carolina, Sammy was a man whose spirit shone brightly through his humor and warmth.
For over 30 years, Sammy dedicated his career to substation maintenance with Carolina Power, now known as Duke Energy Progress. His commitment to his work was evident, but it paled in comparison to how he cherished his most significant role as a father and grandfather. Family was Sammy's proudest accomplishment, and he poured his heart into every relationship he nurtured.
Sammy was a "die-hard" NASCAR fan and also a Redskins football fan. He loved nothing better than to see his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt, Sr., fly across the finish line with the checkered flag being waved. When he sat down to watch football, he was always excited by the stance and running power of his favorite fullback, John "Diesel" Riggins, also known as "Riggo."
He leaves behind his beloved children: Marshall G. Joyner, married to Tammy; Angela J. Jeffrey, married to Jed; and Cathy J. Lemon, married to Richard. Each of them carries forward his legacy, filling their lives with the values he instilled and the love he freely gave. Sammy was not only a father; he was a source of guidance, humor, and unwavering support. His grandchildren— Hannah Henley (Taylor), Kylie Joyner, Isabella Lemon, Jake Jeffrey, and Kaleigh Jeffrey—are fortunate to carry the effects of his laughter and wisdom as they navigate their own paths. His great-grandchildren, Duncan Henley and Riley Henley, were a bright light in his life, and he took immense joy in their smiles.
Sammy is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Jean Patrick Joyner, who he adored deeply. He is also survived by the memories of his parents, Samuel Marshall Joyner and Sadie Edwards Joyner, whose love set the foundation for his own family bonds.
Friends and family are invited to gather for a visitation on May 22, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Roberdell Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Eastside Cemetery. It is within these walls that many will share stories and celebrate the life of a remarkable man who touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Sammy Joyner’s spirit will live on in the laughter and love he spread throughout his life. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family and friends, and while he may be gone, his essence will continue to resonate in the lives that he shaped so lovingly.
