Samuel Hammett Obituary

Samuel Hammett

January 11, 1948 - November 23, 2025

Samuel (Sam) David Hammett, 77, from Inman, SC, passed away quietly in his sleep in the early morning hours of November 23rd after a long illness. Sam was the epitome of a Southern Gentleman, always immaculately dressed, polite and mannerly.

He was beloved by all who knew him and made friends everywhere he went. A graduate of Chapman High School and Spartanburg Technical College, he joined Norfolk Southern Railway in 1968. A series of promotions lead him from Knoxville on to Chattanooga, Tennessee and Washington D.C. before retiring in Roanoke, Virginia after a successful 35-year career.

Sam spent the last four years in Greer, SC living at The Residences at Greer. There he was known among the residents for his respectful manners and love of shagging to Beach Music. He loved golf, music, dancing, attending Virginia Tech football games, and anything railroad related. He was involved in Virginia Republican Party politics.

Sam goes to join his father, Kermit, mother, Edna, and brother, Eddie, all of Inman. He leaves behind a daughter, Samantha Leigh (Hammett) Thomas (Mark), a grandson, Samuel Owen Thomas and a granddaughter, Caroline Kettering Thomas, of Alpharetta, Georgia as well as a sister, Rose Marie Phillips (Al) of Campobello, South Carolina. He also had three nephews and two nieces.

He was baptized at Inman First Baptist Church and accepted Jesus as his Savior as a young man. Graveside services, led by Rev. Al Phillips, will be held to celebrate his life on November 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery across from Chapman High School in Inman, SC. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to MSA Hospice at 528 Howell Suite 20, Greenville SC 29615.

Earlier today

Sam was such a part of the Roanoke scene for so many years. His easy going nature, bright friendly smile and good words for everyone he met. He has certainly been missed by his friends in Roanoke the past few years and will be remembered as one of the " Good Guys"!!

I'm so sorry to learn of Sam's passing. I've known Sam for nearly 40 years. I left Roanoke several years ago, as did Sam,but in all the many years, there, I never saw Sam without a smile on his face...always pleasant, always kind and generous to everyone. He was a lovely gentleman.
I send my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Sam's family
