Who was Sam Haynes? His name alone says it all! "Grandpap" is what his family called him. He had numerous friends spread throughout the surrounding counties. He never met a stranger. Anybody who ever met Sam has a story to tell–even if it is stretched a little. Laughing loudly and swapping stories was a true enjoyment for him. And oh boy, was his laugh contagious and distinct. That laugh isn't gone, his three daughters who are left to cherish his memory have that same unique laugh. You could pick Sam and them girls out of a crowd if you just listened for a minute.
Sam was a lifetime farmer alongside the real farmer, Granny. He thoroughly enjoyed living on that beautiful farm since he was 16 years old. Him and Granny have raised just about everything on that farm including, but not limited to, young'uns, sheep, cows, horses, pigs, rabbits, chickens, fish, and goats. A couple grand-young'uns learned the hard way that you are not allowed to chase chickens. In addition to animals, he loved to raise huge gardens. Him and Granny had green thumbs like no other, their gardens thrived. It was a joy for him to talk gardening and show off all their produce. He met a lot of good people through this passion.
Sam was a Brother Mason for 57 years and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He served in the US Army from March 1961 to March 1964 serving with the 2nd Armored Division "Hell On Wheels" Fort Hood, TX. He was a part of Operation Big Lift in October 1963, moving the entire division to Germany.
Sam worked in the coal mines for almost 27 years, the majority of those years were spent at Meadow River Coal Mines. Part of his storytelling was mastered underground. The story he was most proud of was getting by with telling everyone he had three kids named Ralph, Tom, and Clyde. If you know the family, these are three girls who cherish these nicknames their daddy gave them.
He loved many people and was loved by many, including Pooh, Grandpap's precious four-legged companion.
