Samuel Johnson Obituary
Samuel Rufus Johnson, known and loved by all as "Pops," was born on September 29, 1946, on
the South Side of Chicago-a place that shaped his pride, spirit, and lifelong love for sports.
Pops lived boldly and fully. As a young man, he traveled the world and honorably served four years
in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his service, he landed in New York,
determined to build a life grounded in resilience, joy, and connection.
Of all the roles Pops played in his many lives, his favorite was being a father. The birth of his
daughter, Samantha, on February 7, 1990, was the proudest moment of his life. If you knew Pops,
you knew Samantha-her name spoken often and always with love. He also shared a lifelong bond
with Annette (or as he lovingly called her, "Annie"), the mother of his daughter, with whom he
shared many chapters, memories, and years.
Pops was a proud father and grandfather, a loving uncle, a cherished brother, and a loyal friend. He
never met a stranger and believed deeply in the power of kindness and laughter. He also shared a
special bond with his beloved dog, Bailey, his 12-year-old companion and constant best friend. A
die-hard fan of the Chicago Bears, Bulls, and Cubs, Pops could often be found watching a game,
smiling, joking, and sharing stories.
He spent 20 years working for Disney, retiring in 2016. Retirement suited Pops well, giving him more
time for what mattered most-family, friends, movies, sports, and his cherished role as a church
greeter. Always sharply dressed, he greeted every person with warmth, joy, and an unforgettable
laugh.
Pops will be remembered for his big heart, his welcoming spirit, and the love he gave so freely. His
presence was a gift, and his legacy lives on in every smile he inspired.
Samuel "Pops" Johnson passed peacefully at his home on January 12, 2026, at 2:54 a.m.,
surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 79. Pops journey on earth may have ended, but his soul
rejoices in the presence of the Lord, where love and laughter know no end.
