On the night of April 1, 2023, Samuel "Sammy" Rivas, passed away suddenly due to pancreatitis complications in Downey, California. He leaves behind his wife, Martha "Chely" of 40 years, four children (Samuel Alejandro, Omar Jorge, Erik Joel, and Stephanie), and four grandchildren (Sophia Nicole, Maya Kinsley, Riley Grace, and Elena Rose).
Samuel was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico to Samuel, Sr. and Gloria Rivas on September 21, 1957; both of whom have departed. Together they had ten children, Samuel was the third eldest and first son. He leaves behind his siblings: Gloria, Tere, Urbano, Adriana, Mario, Miguel, Javier, Ruben, and Lucy.
His love for soccer started at a very young age, as he could always be found kicking a soccer ball in his childhood neighborhood. He made his debut with the Gallos of Jalisco in 1978 where he played before signing with Chivas in 1980 as a striker. He is still remembered for making the winning goal, eliminating America in the semi-finals and prompting the huge brawl of 1982-1983 'El Súper Clásico'. In 1985, he went to Morelia and later played with Tigres of Monterey. After his retirement from fútbol in 1988, he continued his passion by coaching the youth in the United States. He was very proud to have coached for the Chivas USA-MLS. He remains a legend of the game.
He met the love of his life, Chely, in Guadalajara while she was visiting during the summer of 1980. After a few months of courting, he had to decide whether to sign with Chivas or Leon. Leon was offering more money, but if he chose Chivas, he would be able to continue with their courtship. Chely on the other end, had to decide whether to continue her studies at UCI (University of California at Irvine) or put her future in the hands of this famous "fútbol star." They both chose love and the rest is history.
In 2001, Samuel became a civil servant when he joined the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) as an Eligibility Worker. He took pride in helping the residences of Los Angeles County in applying for assistance in their time of need. He retired from his county career in September 2022, after 22 years of service.
Samuel "Sammy" Rivas will always be remembered for his contagious smile, his warm hospitality, and his love of life. He was a devout Catholic and had a strong love for Christ. He treasured his time with his friends and never took for granted the loving memories he created with family. He will be missed dearly.
We thank you for being an amazing husband, father, grandfather, son, tio, brother, in-law, friend, and coach to all. We love you and will always keep you close in our hearts!
