Montrose - Samuel S. Shorter, Jr., age 79, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025 at the New York State Veterans Home at Montrose in Montrose, New York. Born in Bronxville, New York to the late Samuel S. Shorter, Sr. and Katherine (Chappell) Shorter, Sam lived in the Orange County, New York area for many years and had been a mechanic all his life. He enjoyed fixing cars since a young age and in high school he started a car repair club named "Cam Busters." After graduating high school, Sam attended automotive technical school in Denver, Colorado prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War. After serving his country, he continued his work in the automotive field and he retired from Truck Stops of America in Maybrook. Sam was a member of the First Reformed Church in Walden and was part of the Men's breakfasts at church. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Imogene "Genie" Babb Shorter and his brothers, Thomas and Christopher. Sam is survived by his three sons, Samuel, III, John, and Robert; his daughter, Arlene; his siblings, Frank, Susan, Nannette, Mary Anna, Amie, Barbara, and Michael; and his and his late wife, Genie's close lifetime friends, Lisa Skinner and Raymond Turse. Anyone who knew Sam, will surely miss his greeting to all: "Sam, Sam Shorter here..." A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at the First Reformed Church, 70 Scofield Street, Walden NY 12586. Inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 29, 2025 at the Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, New York. Private cremation services have been entrusted to the Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank Street (Route 23), Sussex, NJ. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.pinkelfuneralhome.com
