Samuel J. Singletary, Sr. was born in Florence County of South Carolina on September 2, 1936 to the late Willie Singletary and Tina Mae Gamble. He was the second oldest of twelve children during his childhood years in Lake City where he met and married Bernice Gamble. Samuel entered into eternal rest on May 6, 2024.
Samuel was employed by Malt Liquor in Paterson and worked at Riverview Towers where he retired after many years. His early years were filled with the warmth of Lake City until he found love and companionship with Bernice Gamble, whom he married, and they relocated to New Jersey. Together, they were blessed with five beautiful children: Barbara, Samuel Jr, Terry, Marlene, and Robert.
Samuel was reunited in heaven with his dear wife, Bernice, their daughter Barbara, and sons Samuel Jr. and Terry. He was also preceded in death by his siblings William "Tootsie" Singletary, Henry Singletary, Italy Singletary, Odell Singletary, and Betty Ann Lee all of Lake City, South Carolina.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory are his devoted daughter, Marlene (James), son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Singletary. Samuel's legacy continues through his grandchildren: Myesha (Terry), Kanvas, Terrilyn, Sammy III, Isiah, Diamond, Jamel (Carina), Joshua (Erika), Elijah (Mi'Cole), Josiah (Crystal), Michael, Malcolm, Ayanna, Robert Jr., Alquan, Alnasia & Jayda; his great-grandchildren, Zierra, Serenity, Tyree, Trinity, Tobias, Sanai, Isanella, Paris, Payton, Britain, Cornell, Nasir, Tristan, Gionna, Ari, Micah, Zhamier, Rhajhson, (mane, Osiris; great-great-grandchildren, Bryson and Zi'ari who ALL brought him great joy and pride.
Samuel also held a special place in his heart for his godchildren: the late Buster Singletary and Jenna Johnson. Surviving Godchildren: Shashauna McCoy, Perry Lemmon Jr., Justin Miller, Jeremy King, Darren McCutchen, and Celestria Nicole Wells. He is survived by his in-laws, Ruby Edwards of Florence SC, and Drucilla Brown of Paterson, NJ, siblings: Willie Jr. Singletary, Bobby Singletary, David (Rev. Grace) Singletary of Lake City, South Carolina, Leroy (Sue) Singletary, Lena Wright, Lucille Major of NJ, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Samuel will forever be remembered for his love, quietness, and modest spirit. His spirit will live forever in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
