Sandra Lee Dombrowski Davies was born in Utica, New York on July 28, 1953 to John and Mary Dombrowski (nee Gawron). She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Carol Dombrowski and Denise Wolfe. Sr. Sharon Marie Dombrowski survives, along with several cousins and niece Melissa Raynor (James) and family. She is deeply mourned by her children, John Davies of Cincinnati, Michael Davies (Angela) of Florence, and Jennifer Wesley (Derek) of Cincinnati. She was the cherished Babcia of Margaret and Evelyn Davies and Jacob and Julian Wesley. Honorary mom to Jamie Perkins (Alonzo) and "Grandma Sandy" to Harrison and Matilyn Perkins.
She was a learned and well-respected nurse, graduating with her Associates Degree in Nursing from Northern Kentucky University in 1980 and retiring from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 2006. Her career's accomplishments are numerous, but her biggest impact came from helping families in need of education and a gentle guiding hand. She helped hundreds of children and families during her nursing career, both in the hospital and in their homes. She was active in the Bone Marrow Transplant program from its earliest days, worked with StarShine hospice to provide excellent care to children and their families under unimaginable circumstances, and was a trusted resource within the department. She published an educational piece in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 1989, and again with a brilliant team in the Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing in 2000. She educated and coached countless resident physicians, nurses, and patient families. Her impact on the Bone Marrow Transplant program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital is undeniable, and her legacy lives on far past her retirement.
Sandy was passionate about her Polish heritage, cooking, crafting, traveling, her children and grandchildren, and her friends. She is, no doubt, reunited with her best friend Karen and catching up over the last 11 years. They are, no doubt, heckling and reminiscing with Brian and Neal. She is, no doubt, finally pain-free and reunited with all of those she has loved and missed for so long. She walks freely. She breathes deeply. She laughs heartily. She sees the Northern Lights, at long last.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 4 p.m. until the time of Catholic Blessing at 6 p.m. at Stith Funeral Home, 7500 US HWY 42, Florence, KY 41042. I worked with Sandy on the BMT unit at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. One of my favorite memories was a night she came to help me perform a procedure on my patient who was a toddler and very distressed. Sandy recognized the child wanted me to hold her still and Sandy did the procedure. The child quickly relaxed and the procedure went smoothly. Sandy was a caring and compassionate nurse who touched the lives of countless children, families and coworkers.
