Sandra Shay Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapel By The Sea on Jan. 13, 2025.
Sandra (Sandy) Lucille Shay was respected teacher, friend & neighbor. She was an animal lover. She especially loved her cats! She could be heard calling out their names at night to come inside. She had a glass case that reflected like a mirror that she would look out of and see who passed by or came down to visit her. She could see the neighborhood kids from it playing out on the street. She could see deer passing by her big ol' window snacking on her yummy apples from her apple tree. Sandy was looked up to by her former students. Her piano was filled with senior portraits and graduation announcements.
Sandy was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital in her final moments of life. Until she didn't make it out. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on December 27, 2024 at 7AM. She will always be remembered as a great teacher, amazing friend and lovely neighbor.
You will be forever missed Sandy.
From her friend Cyndi:
Miss Shay was a beloved member of our community that contributed to many businesses. She was know as the local food critic because she loved to have lunch or dinner from different restaurants and give them her opinion on food and or service. She was a teacher for over 30 years at the junior high and getting to know her students by name and their siblings and even families. After she retired Sandy would run into her former students and call them by name and ask how their siblings or parents were doing, always calling them all by name. She was an avid history buff. If she did not know a town, city, state or country she had a very large Atlas to guide her (this was before the internet). She loved good home cooked food, which several people cooked for her and was always cared for by her neighbors; Felipe, Irene, Isabel, Esteban, and Felipito. In who watched over her always with kindness and love. As well as her good friend Olivia; whom she went to college with and then moved down together to Fort Bragg for jobs.
With Lots of Love,
Your Beloved Friend Cyndi
