Sanilita Undag

Sanilita “Sani” (Gutang) Undag, of Quincy and Iligan City, Philippines passed away peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She was 79.

Sanilita was born in La Libertad, Negros Oriental, Philippines, on May 16, 1945. Sani, or “Babie”, as she was fondly known by her friends and family, was the daughter of the late Santiago Martinez Gutang and Julieta (Tan-Recla) Gutang.

A proud graduate of the pioneering class of Mindanao State University in Marawi, Philippines, Sani earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Sanilita’s thirst for knowledge was as boundless as her heart. She understood that education was a lifelong gift—one that could open doors and alter the course of one’s life immeasurably. This philosophy guided her life, and she was always eager to share her wisdom and encourage others to pursue their dreams—especially the women in her family.

Sanilita’s love for the arts was equally profound. A gifted musician and songbird, she could play the piano by ear, filling the spaces around her with melodies that spoke to the soul. Her voice, too, was something special—she loved to sing, and her rendition of “Little Things Mean a Lot” by Kitty Kallen was especially dear to her and those fortunate enough to witness her talent. Music brought Sani immense joy and connected her to others, often becoming the soundtrack to unforgettable moments shared with friends and family. Sani had an undying love for live music—seeing Bon Jovi many times in concert, and bearing one single lifelong regret of missing Elvis Presley in person. 

Sani’s other passions included collecting postal and geographical stamps—a fulfilling hobby that spoke to her love for travel and appreciation for beautiful things. She had a green thumb and a particular fondness for orchids, labeling them in their scientific names, tending to her garden with the same care and attention she gave to everything and everyone she loved.

In addition to her many talents, Sanilita was an orator and an engaging, warm radio announcer in her hometown, where her voice became a familiar and comforting presence to all who tuned in. Sani’s style was impeccable and timeless, her outfits an expression of her artistic and resonant soul. You could spot Sani from miles away, wearing 5-inch heels as daring and fierce as her fiery spirit and personality. Whether at work or a grand party, Sanilita exuded an unparalleled confidence—making an indelible mark on all she encountered.

A woman ahead of her time, Sanilita was resolute in her dreams and ambitions, seeing far more for herself than was expected of women of her time. She was a force of nature who pushed boundaries—her strength, sharp wit, and tenacity inspired all who knew her. Her zest for life was limitless. Sani loved family gatherings and time spent with friends, showing off her compelling singing voice, and sharing her infectious energy with all. 

Sanilita leaves behind a legacy of empowerment, love, and a life of purpose and meaning. Her life was a testament to resilience, passion, and an unwavering belief in the power of education and determination. She touched the hearts of many with her kindness, creativity, and intelligence. Sani’s memory will continue to inspire those who knew her and hold her dearly in their hearts. 

Sanilita was the beloved wife of the late Cornelio A. Undag Jr. She was the devoted mother of Cornelio Jr II “Jimwil”, Corsanil “Abloy”, Cormara “Mara”, Cornelio Arlan “Bolo”, Jhannah “Hannah” and her husband Elton Ernest, Carla Sanilita “Carla” and her late husband Robert Bruce Robbs, Ariel “Yoyoy”, Byron, Darlene Jihan Gaven and her longtime partner Arthur Fula, and Anwar “Cuying”. Sanilita was the loving Lola (grandmother) of Kyle, Kara, Charles, Elton, Jared, Caitlyn, Christian, Candace, Chanel, Zac, and Judd Rexell. She was preceded in death by her seven siblings. Sanilita is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 4-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 10 AM on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, prior to the funeral service in First Presbyterian Church, 270 Franklin St., Quincy, at 11 AM. 

Services will conclude with interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Boston. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Sanilita's name to the charitable organization of one's choice.
