Death Notice

Sarah Suzanne Barnes Turner

1945 - 2024

Sarah Suzanne Barnes Turner went to her heavenly home on February 19, 2024 following a long brave fight with complications from abdominal surgery.
She was born March 30, 1945 in Salisbury to the late James Dewey Barnes, Sr. and Ruby Bivins Barnes. Suzanne was a proud member and valedictorian of the NRHS Class of 1963. She retired in 1994 after a career in childcare. Parents often ascertained that she was planning to continue before they planned another child.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury and Sojourners Sunday School Class.
Suzanne was a giver and a gift to all who met her. She never met a stranger and was quick to offer a compliment to whomever she met and to learn their name, which she would remember. She made everyone she met feel special. She was proud to share that God had given her the gift of gab. She always placed others first and was a faithful friend to all. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Suzanne was an avid reader of mysteries and loved working jigsaw puzzles.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Dewey Barnes, Jr.
Suzanne is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 60+ years, Larry Ward Turner, whom she married June 2, 1963. She is also survived by daughter Jenna Turner Fry (Charles) of Salisbury; son, Jon Ethan Turner (Marsha) of Pittsburgh, PA; grandchildren Caitlyn Fry McGee (Chris) of Charleston, SC, Caroline Fry van der Poel (Scott) of Gastonia; Charles Addison Fry (fiancé, Justyn) of Washington, DC; Lauren Hailey Turner and Lindsey Morgan Turner of Pittsburgh; and great-granddaughter Annie Shay McGee of Charleston. She also was anxiously awaiting the March arrival of baby van der Poel.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday (Feb 22) at Summersett Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 1 PM Friday (Feb 23) at First Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Kenneth Lance & Rev. Brian Farmer. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.
