Sarah Thompson Obituary
Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Sarah Thompson (Meady) of Winchester, VA and formerly from Middleburg, VA, a strong, independent, and deeply loving woman of God passed away at the age of 87 on July 25th at her home in Winchester, VA.
Born October 9,1937 to the late Rudolph Summers Sr and Sally Basil Summers. She was the second of three children and the only girl. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Ernest M Thompson.
She retired from Foxcroft School in Middleburg VA in 2009 after 57 years of faithful service where she wore many hats, being especially remembered as head cook, and where she built many lasting friendships with so many from all over the world and earned the respect of colleagues and friends through her diligence, hard work ethic and integrity.
Sarah touched countless lives with her love, and creativity, and used her exceptional cooking and baking skills that God gave her to fatten up many friends and family with her cakes (especially her coconut cakes), pies, puddings and fried chicken to beef wellington along with many more tasty dishes. You name it mom could make it. If you came to her house, you would never leave hungry. She loved gardening, decorating, bingo, the casino or going to yard sales with her girls, and keeping her house spotless at all times is where she found delight. She was a lifelong enthusiast of crosswords, reading, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and loved her soaps. When she got to where she couldn't get out as much, she couldn't wait to dial into Sunday morning service and bible study on Tuesday evenings with the Good Hope Baptist Church family.
Faith and Family were the cornerstones of her life. She would move heaven and earth to care for those she loved, and her home was always filled with warmth, peace and the love of the Lord along with her gentle smile and hugs. Her compassion extended far beyond her household; she was deeply committed to supporting anyone she could lend a hand; in any way she was able to.
Mom knew we would tell a few of her secrets, and our sister Debra made sure we did. Here we go with three: Mom was in love with the singer Lou Rawls and our dad knew it and took her to a couple of his concerts, she made the best sweet tea in the world that everyone loved but we think she put a five pound bag of sugar in each pitcher, and in her younger days when we were kids she would never leave the house without her red lipstick. That's it and what we would do right now to play the Lou Rawls hit song for her (You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine), or to have one more glass of her sweet tea made with her beautiful hands, or to hear her lovely voice telling our dad to turn the car around and go back to the house so she can get her red lipstick, See you in Heaven mom were missing you so much already and Lou Rawls was right we could never find another mothers love like yours.
Sarah was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ernest M Thompson, mother, Sally B Summers, brother, Rudolph Summers, son, David Summers, daughters, Lisa Summers Murray and Sally Hicks, two grandchildren, Lakisha Summers, and Falisha Summers.
She is lovingly remembered and missed by her daughters, Debra Shelton, Althea Thompson (Eugene), Robin Thompson, Stephanie Thompson Imran (Abdulganiyu), son, Rev Ernest Thompson; son in-law Jeff Murry, brother Joseph Summers (Mildred), brother in-law Mortimer Thompson (Mozell), and the loves of her life, eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, along with many special nephews, nieces, cousins.
She will also be remembered by so many lifelong friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness, smile, and unwavering loyalty and love.
The family would also like to recognize and thank her special caregivers - companions whom Mom loved like family: Ms. Hannah, Ms. Sylvia, Ms. Love and Debra her daughter, who cared for mom with such love, caring and compassion over the past 7 years.
Her legacy of unwavering faith, love for family, generous heart, and tireless work ethic will live on in the hearts of her family, friends and all who were blessed to have known her.
