Scott Alexander Machlay

Scott Alexander Machlay, age 70, passed away peacefully at his home in Sterling Heights on December 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family after an illness.
Scott was born on May 8, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, to Alexander and Erlene (née Meyers) Machlay. Raised in Ferndale, Scott later attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette. He dedicated his life to public service, serving in the U.S. Navy and then beginning a career as a sheriff in North Carolina before joining the Detroit Police Department. For the majority of his career, Scott served as a U.S. Marshal, exemplifying dedication and integrity in federal law enforcement. Known for his stern yet kind demeanor, Scott earned the respect of all who knew him.
On October 9, 2010, Scott married the love of his life, Diane, in a heartfelt ceremony in Warren, Michigan. Together, they built a life filled with shared joys and mutual devotion.
In his personal time, Scott found fulfillment in raising puppies for Leader Dogs for the Blind, a cause he supported alongside his late sister, Joann. He remained a steadfast donor and advocate for the organization. In his younger years, Scott enjoyed bowling, and in more recent years, he was an avid fan of Detroit sports. Whether cheering on the Red Wings, Lions, or Tigers, Scott's loyalty to his hometown teams was unwavering.
Scott was a man of Catholic faith, which guided him throughout his life. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Diane Machlay; his son, Jeremy (Julie) Machlay; his stepson, Chad Opalewski; and his brothers, Jim (Claire) Machlay, Tom Machlay, and Mark (Laurie) Machlay. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Erlene Machlay, and his sister, Joann Machlay.
Funeral services for Scott will be private, honoring his wishes for a quiet farewell surrounded by family.
