Sergiu Nicolaescu Obituary
The Elias Hospital said Nicolaescu died from heart and lung complications following surgery for digestive problems.
Nicolaescu quit politics in December, having been Senator for the Social Democracy Party since 1992.
Nicolaescu made some 50 movies in his lifetime, and despite his career in politics, continued to direct films such as the "Orient Express" in 2004.
He was best known for historical films which found favor with the Communist regime before it collapsed in 1989. His 1979 movie "Mihai the Brave" is considered a cinematic classic in Romania.
"A star of Romania has been extinguished," said Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
Nicolaescu was also an actor, and had several leading roles during his career, notably playing King Carol I in "Carol I," a movie he also directed that was released in 2010.

Zilele acestea neamul nostru si-a agitat iarasi apele sufletesti demonstrând o incapacitate aproape structurala de a depasi dualismul acestei lumi, dar mai ales elementara si atât de necesara distinctie între individul biologic si omul exponent al unor idei, sentimente, spatii culturale. Ma refer acum la cazul Sergiu Nicolaescu, desi este mai mult decât un simplu caz. Este un pretext prin care, asa cum spuneam, ne-am relevat înca o data cum suntem ca natiune, cel putin în acest moment istoric. Eu nu judec si nu pun etichete, dar daca un om poate naste asemenea dezbateri nationale, cu siguranta este important pentru acel popor. Unii l-au oferit ca exemplu, altii l-au înfierat ca si contraexemplu, cert este ca acest cineast a constituit un ferment pentru o introspectie, poate superficiala, oricum o introspectie în fibra natiunii. Datorita acestui fapt eu am scris o poezie pe care v-o transmit cu toata consideratia pentru acei oameni care ne sunt calauze ale unui parcurs fascinant din spatiul national catre spatiul universal.

Românitatea astazi în suflet lacrimi creste,
Eroii ei ilustri de veste dau în cer,
Nicolaescu Sergiu spre ei acum paseste
În urma lui pamântul a-ncremenit în ger.
Aud în departare topind într-o multime
O lacrima curata un tinerel balai,
Un pistruiat de aur nepotrivit în rime
Cu spiritele vremii iluzii pentru rai.
Si totusi pata oarba, ideea comunista
Nu i-a atins esenta, caci el, nevoalat,
A zugravit în cadre cu inima artista
Esente umaniste, femeie si barbat,
Esente în miscare, esente-n devenire
Între lumini si umbre, proiecte catre cer,
Pocale ale artei urcând spre nemurire
Si pâinea lor si vinul si chipul efemer.
Îti multumim, maestre, ca ne-ai hranit cu arta,
Peliculele tale au suflet românesc,
Istoria luminii si-a umbrelor mai poarta
Eternele mistere din tot ce-i omenesc.
Istoria de veacuri, poema cea româna
Idei si sentimente mereu ti-a inspirat,
Iar tu trudit-ai aspru ca toate sa ramâna,
Sa-nvete tot românul ce trebuie-nvatat!
Tu pe ecranul lumii ne-ai proiectat, maestre,
Si stim deplin si sigur: Nu suntem mai prejos!
Sa-ti fie lina viata în lumile celeste
Cu neamul din vechime si cu Iisus Hristos!
