Mr. Shan P. Williams, Sr. was born on October 1, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Arnold W. Brooks and Juanita Theresa Williams Thomas. A native and lifelong resident of Gretna, Louisiana, Shan, Sr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025, 8:30 P.M., at Ochsner Medical Center Main Campus surrounded by his loving children, Shandrea and Shan Jr., and his devoted companion. A proud 1966 graduate of L.B. Landry Senior High School, Shan, Sr. earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Plus 30 degrees from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge. A trailblazer in education, he became the first African-American Physical Education Teacher and Coach at Edna Karr Junior High School and later served as Head Coach and Assistant Coach in football, baseball, and track and field at L.B. Landry Senior High School. During his distinguished career with the Orleans Parish School Board, Shan, Sr. served as Human Resources Specialist for Certificated Personnel and Interim Athletic Director. As principal, he led with vision and dedication at Thomas Alva Edison Elementary School, Francis T. Nicholls/Frederick A. Douglass Senior High School, Joseph S. Clark Senior High School, L.B. Landry Senior High School (Interim), Oliver Perry Walker Senior High School, and Landry-Walker Senior High School. After retiring from the school system, he returned to L.B. Landry High School as Education Administrator for the Algiers Charter School Association. As President of the Professional Administrators of New Orleans Public Schools, Inc. (PANOPSI), Shan, Sr. was instrumental in affiliating the organization with the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA), AFL-CIO, Local 17, creating the South’s first organized school administrators’ union. He also devoted his time to mentoring youth through the Gretna Recreation and Instructional Department (GRID), the Gretna Boys and Girls Club, and the LHSAA Executive Committee, where he earned a Lifetime Coaching Card for his dedication to athletics and leadership. A man of deep faith and fellowship, Shan, Sr. was a devoted member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Harvey, LA, where he served faithfully as Chairman of the Deacons’ Ministry and a member of the Male Chorus. He was also a proud 50-year member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Rho Chapter (Past Basileus); a member of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club; and O.J. Dunn Lodge #85 F&AM. In 2023, he was deeply honored to serve as Grand Marshal of NOMTOC. Shan, Sr. was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elois “Lulu” Brown Williams, and his parents. He is survived by his children, Attorney Shandrea P. Williams (Tiffany) and Shan P. Williams, Jr. (Keisha); grandchildren, Shan III, Shayhan, Shaina, and Shelby; faithful companion, siblings, and a host of relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, New Hope Baptist Church, St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, and all neighboring churches; members of L. B. Landry Alumni Association (Class of 1966), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, O. J. Dunn Lodge #85 F&AM; active and former administrators, faculty, staff and students of Southern University A&M College (Law Center), Purdue Global Law School, and Andrew Wilson Charter School; active and retired employees of the Orleans Parish School Board, Algiers Charter Schools, and InspireNOLA Charter Schools; employees of L&R Security Services, Inc. are invited to attend a Visitation at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, 1738 L. B. Landry Avenue, New Orleans, LA on Monday, November 10, 2025 from 4:00p.m.-7:00p.m. Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at 10:00a.m. Pastor Norman Francis, host pastor; Pastor Louis Harrison, officiating. Viewing will be held from 8:00a.m.-10:00a.m. Interment: New Hope Cemetery-Gretna, LA. Arrangements by Davis Mortuary Service, 230 Monroe St., Gretna, LA.
