Sharon Schaefbauer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kesling Funeral Home - Mobridge on Jan. 21, 2026.
Funeral services for Sharon Schaefbauer, 80, of Pierre and formerly of Selby, will be at 10:30 am, Friday, January 30, 2026, at Selby Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation will go from 5 pm to 7pm, Thursday, January 29, 2026, also at the church. A time of sharing will begin at 6:30 pm. Sharon passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Avera St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD.

Sharon Ann Baumann was born on January 8, 1946, to Emanuel and Myrtle (Anderson) Baumann in Mobridge, SD. She grew up in Selby, SD where she stayed busy in her younger years with activities that ranged from mud pie making to being active in many school activities. After graduating high school, she attended Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen, SD. She worked at several places throughout her adult years and never let any moss grow on her feet.

She married Frank Schaefbauer Jr. and together they had two sons, Shane and Wayne, who would keep her busy for years as she chased them around to their various sports activities. When their teams played against each other, she would simply cheer for both.

God called Sharon home on Wednesday afternoon, January 20, 2026, at Avera Health Care in Pierre, SD. She was surrounded by family and went home with a smile on her face and laughter in her heart shortly after the "Schaefbauer Salute" was explained to her. God's timing was impeccable and there was no suffering.

Sharon was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2025. She struggled after her first round of chemotherapy and was admitted into the hospital. Upon discharge, her son Wayne and his wife Alyssa "took away the car keys" and insisted she come live with them to ensure she followed doctor's orders and focused on recovery. Though she protested a bit, we believe she truly appreciated the opportunity to be spoiled and to spend more time with her son and grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Mimi."

Grateful for having shared Sharon's life are her children, Shane Schaefbauer and Wayne (Alyssa) Schaefbauer; her grandchildren, Stan, Alex, Rylon, and Breana; many nieces, nephews, and friends; her niece Charlotte Martin, who was like a sister to her and her rock; and the members of the Art Lafferty family, with whom she shared a special bond.

Preceding Sharon in death were her parents, Emanuel and Myrtle; sisters Ardell Lewis, Ardyth Peterson, Phyllis Chesky, Sybil Chesky; and brother Floyd Baumann.

Special thanks to her medical team at Avera Health Care for everything you did for Sharon. You are truly amazing!
