Sharon Schut Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Yntema Funeral Home on Mar. 7, 2026.
Sharon Schut, 96, of Jamestown, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Sharon was born August 19, 1929, at the Schut family home in Hudsonville to Lewis and Minnie (Vruggink) Schut. Sharon became a skilled carpenter and worked as a self-employed builder in the Jenison, Hudsonville, and Jamestown area until his retirement. He married Marilyn Jean Berghorst, and they raised their three children in Hudsonville and were active members of Jamestown Baptist Church.

In retirement Sharon made 1/16th scale wood replica models of barns, train depots, a church, a working gristmill, a water powered sawmill, and more. His collection became large enough he built a 30-foot diameter, two story round barn at his home to display and house it all. Many church groups, and visitors came to admire the collection of 35 plus exhibits. In 2018, he entered scale replicas of the Jenison and Hudsonville 1872 train depots in the Art Prize competition which also included a water tower, a Pere Marquette steam locomotive with moving rocker arms and wheels that turned on the track.

He is survived by his children: Gloria Pyle, Terry and Ann Schut, Arlen and Ruth Schut; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Mitchell Pyle, Chad Pyle and girlfriend Sarah Holland, Kurt and Charlene Pyle (Audrey, Laney, Brantley), Jennifer and Ryan Vugteveen (Colton, Avery, Easton), Jeanna and Jason Gyorki (Presley, Jaxton, Grayson, Eden), Jill and Scott Snyder (Ella, Owen), Christina and Ryan Sykes (Evelyn, Lillian, Isaac), Maggie and Brandon Phillips (Anderson, Preston, Finley), Nate Schut; brother Hoyt Schut, sister-in-law Betty Schut, and many extended family members. Sharon was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Jean Schut, in 2000. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law Terry Pyle, his great-grandson Hudson Vugteveen, and his Schut siblings: Mabel, Edna, Russ, Duane, Norl.

The Schut Family is especially thankful and grateful for the exceptional care Sharon received from the Sheldon Meadows staff in the past year and a half, and also for the excellent care of Corewell Hospice in the past months.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Jamestown Baptist Church, 2472 Quincy Street, Hudsonville MI 49426. Visitation will be 9:30-10:45 am Wednesday, prior to the funeral at Jamestown Baptist. Interment will be in Star Cemetery. I grew up down the hill from Mr. Schut when I was younger and I would always visit his wife as he took care of her. He would always let me ride my horse in his woods. I´ll never forget the time he called me up and said I have about five baby raccoons that need a mama, and I headed up there with my dad and grab those babies. And the time he gave me his Billie goat; Theodore. My childhood was priceless with him and as an adult he never forgot me and treated my son just the same. He was the most selfless, thoughtful, kindest neighbor anyone could ever meet. I will miss him greatly.
