Sharon Thayer Obituary

Sharon A. (Grant) Thayer

May 1, 1943 - January 12, 2026

HUDSON FALLS – Sharon A. (Grant) Thayer, 82, of Hudson Falls, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Fort Hudson Nursing Center in Fort Edward following a long illness.

Born May 1, 1943, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bessie (Metraw) Grant.

Sharon grew up in Hudson Falls. At a young age she began working at the family grocery store, Grant's Grocery, which was located at 55 John Street in Hudson Falls. She was a member of the "#9 Girls" from grade school and was the queen of her Jr. Prom. Sharon graduated from Hudson Falls High School and then attended Adirondack Community College. After graduating from ACC, she began her career as a medical secretary for Dr. Orel Friedman in Glens Falls. Sharon also worked at Carleton Funeral Home when Gary Wilson and Bruce Wetmore owned the funeral home. She was a friendly face to see when families attended calling hours and funerals for their loved ones.

She married Douglas J. Thayer on October 1, 1967, at St. Mary's Church in Hudson Falls. In 1970, Doug built a beautiful home in Hudson Falls on Pleasant View Drive and he and Sharon began their family of three with their son, Brian.

Sharon was a longtime communicant of St. Mary's/St. Paul's Church in Hudson Falls. She was always a dedicated volunteer and also a member of the Glens Falls Hospital's Guild and a member of the Washington County Home Bureau Organization.

In the early days of "couponing" Sharon and her good friend, Barb Wornall were diehard "couponers". She was an avid reader and loved the author, Danielle Steele. Sharon loved her perennial gardens and took great pride in making them beautiful. She enjoyed taking rides on the family Bayliner named PITA (pain in the a**) on Lake George where she and Doug would take day and night trips to Red Rock Bay, Black Mountain Pointe and many others. Also, a special shout out to John Labour for being such a good dock boy!

Sharon loved Christmas and every Christmas Eve she hosted wonderful gatherings with her family and friends.

Sharon is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Bessie (Metraw) Grant.

Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, Douglas J. Thayer of Hudson Falls; her son, Brian Thayer of West Fort Ann; several nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Sharon's family would like to thank the staff on G-Wing at Fort Hudson Nursing Center and LeAnn and Donna at the front desk for their compassion and professionalism. They also wish to thank Callz for weekly visits and Debbie Fish for all of her help. They are eternally grateful.

Rite of committal will be held at Union Cemetery on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Sharons family asks that donations be made to the Adirondack Operation Santa, PO Box 707, Hudson Falls, NY 12839 or the Ronald McDonald House Capital Region, 139 S. Lake Avenue, Albany, NY 12208.
