Shaun Skeffington Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Homes - Chesterton Chapel on Apr. 28, 2025.
Shaun F. Skeffington, a longtime resident of Chesterton, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 2, 2025.Shaun was born on February 20, 1943 to Michael and Mary (Nina) at his grandparents home in Carrickfergus, outside of Belfast in Northern Ireland. His father, a house painter, left Ireland in 1948 and found a job and a home in Chicago. Nina, Shaun, and his older brother Michael joined him in 1950. Both boys attended Visitation Grammar School and St. Ritas High School. After graduating, Shaun proudly served in the U.S. Army as a gunner and field lineman. He enjoyed his time in the military and appreciated the opportunity to travel and meet people from different backgrounds. After being honorably discharged, he returned home to Chicago and married childhood friend Rita Roche in 1964. They had four beautiful children; Shaun, James, Heather and Shannon. Shaun and Rita took over Roches Tavern from Ritas parents and ran it until 1970 when the family moved to Chesterton and Shaun began his 33-year career with Bethlehem Steel. Shaun was a skilled craftsman, and upon Ritas death in 2003, he began his second career in home remodeling and repair. In 2008 Shaun met and married Deborah (Debby) and gained three more children. Their family continued to grow and they found endless joy in their 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Shaun was a loving, involved father and grandfather, and took great pride in all of the kids accomplishments. They will miss his jokes, his constant supply of candy, his encouragement, and his unconditional love. Everyone who was lucky enough to get to know Shaun loved him immediately. He loved Debby so much and was so grateful for her help and support through the last years of his life as he battled health problems. Debby will treasure her time with Shaun, although 16 years of marriage will never feel like enough. They loved traveling to sunny locations together, beautifying their yard, spending time with their grandkids, and taking every opportunity to celebrate occasions big and small.Shaun was preceded by his first wife Rita, his brother Mike, and his children Jim, Heather and Shannon. He is survived by his wife Debby, son Shaun (Rachel), daughters Denise (Jaime) Ceja, Valarie (Marc) Ryerson and Cassandra (Octavian) Sanchez, grandchildren McKenzi and Maeve Skeffington, Finn and Allistair Babjak, Amanda (Chris) Picazo, Dre and Adam Ceja, Gina (Kyle) Guidry, Bennett and Brooke Ryerson, and Alba and Joseph Sanchez, and great grandchildren Alicia Bonilla and Henry Guidry, along with countless extended family and friends who loved him dearly. The family will announce a Celebration of Life later this year, and he will be memorialized at the family plot in Chesterton Cemetery. To honor Shaun, please take a moment to enjoy a sunset, tell your family you love them, plant some flowers, and most importantly, LAUGH.
