Obituary published on Legacy.com by Twiford Funeral Homes - Elizabeth City on Dec. 1, 2025.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a phenomenal wife, mother, Mimi, and friend. Sheila Godfrey Meads, 63, of
Elizabeth City, NC, peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 29, 2025, at her residence, with her husband and daughter at her side. She was born on July 25, 1962 to the late Shirley Jean Whitehurst Godfrey and Clarence Calhoon Godfrey, Jr. (Sweet Pea).
Sheila spent her entire career at Albemarle Hospital (later Sentara Albemarle Medical Center), where she worked for 38 years in many different roles. Her compassion for people not only showed in her work as the patient advocate but in her everyday life as well. Her love for Christ was exhibited in all that she did, from her contagious smile, her mama like demeanor, and her amazing spirit. In her free time, when she was not spending time with family, she was helping with items at her church of 25 years, Salem Baptist in Weeksville, NC. Sheila was a member of the Baptist Women's on Mission group, was an advocate for vacation bible school, and worked on the Albemarle Pregnancy Resource Center Baby Bottle Bank (just to name a few of her roles).
One thing about Sheila is she loved a good bargain. You could find her out in the town looking for a deal. Boy, did she love a good thrift store. Traveling was another passion of hers. She loved adventures and seeing the world, visiting places like Ireland, Iceland, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Bermuda, Bahamas, and the list could go on and on. Sheila lived a full life, filled with experiences some would only dream of having, and the love of SO many family, and friends who were more like family.
She was a family-oriented woman who LOVED spending time with her husband of 25 years, Frederick Meads, Jr., her daughter, Ashley Copeland Chrisman (Tim), and her two precious grandbabies who she adored, Sawyer and Audrey. She was certainly one proud Mimi and boasted about those two littles every chance she had. They brought so much joy to her life and the bond they shared is unbreakable. In addition to her husband, daughter and grandchildren, she is survived by her brother Clarence Earl Godfrey (Edna) of Elizabeth City, two nephews, two nieces, and many special cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her very special Aunt, Margaret "Nanny" Godfrey.
Though she may be gone from her earthly body, her memory will live on through those who loved her dearly. She may be gone, but she is NEVER forgotten, and praise Jesus, we know her soul resides in heaven (Romans 10:9-10).
The celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel, officiated by Pastor Dietmar Brady. There will be a time for those who would like to speak, tell stories, etc. offered during her celebration of life. For those not local, you will be able to stream the service via Twiford's website, www.TwifordFH.com.
In her memory and in lieu of flowers, Sheila's last request is for those close to her to please make a donation to Salem Baptist Church, 1401 Salem Church Road,
Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or
your favorite charity (some of hers included World Vision, Smile Train, and Albemarle Pregnancy Resource Center).
The family would like to thank all of those who assisted us during this time of eternal transition of Sheila. Your kindness, love, prayers and support during this time were overwhelming and we are so grateful to each and every one of you.
