Sheldon Arey of Virginia Beach passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025, at age 81. Sheldon was the only child of William Oliver Arey and Dorothy Lillian (Glendenning) Arey
and was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sheldon was predeceased by his parents and his dearly beloved wife, Hope Frances Arey. Though he was an only child and had no children, he built a full and meaningful life surrounded by purpose, service, and friendship. He grew up in Maryland and had many fond memories of travels during his youth for competitive swim meets and fishing trips with his loving parents. As a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Sheldon proudly served 22 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a commander. Following his distinguished military career, he continued his dedication to naval excellence through a second career as a consultant supporting Navy projects. After he retired from active duty, he resided in Northern Virginia to pursue his second career with the consulting company and where he met his late wife. In 2008, he fully retired and relocated to Virginia Beach, where he further enjoyed his love of boating and fishing. Sheldon loved to read historical, sci-fi, and crime novels. He enjoyed experiencing great restaurants, going to the movies, and traveling throughout the world. He was a loyal fan of the Washington Commanders/Redskins and, of course, Go Navy! Sheldon was a lifelong fisherman who found joy on the water and was a long-term supporter of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, contributing significantly through his dedication to the speckled trout tagging program.
Sheldon served as President of his Condominium Association's Board for eight years and provided the community with the highest level of dedication and commitment. He was a regular
volunteer helping military veterans during many scheduled fishing outings throughout the Hampton Roads area. Sheldon is survived by his dear and devoted friend, Laurie Hasten, with whom he shared many wonderful travel experiences and enjoyed her companionship. He was welcomed into her family's lives for the last 14 years of his life, which he greatly cherished.
Everyone who knew Sheldon agreed he was a generous and kind man with a unique sense of humor. He always sought to help others wherever he could, and he will be greatly missed by all who crossed his path.
