Sherman Lee Capps
Sherman Lee Capps, age 77, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at his home in Shorewood, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 5, 1948, in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana, Sherman was the beloved son of the late Denzil and Vera Capps. A graduate of Joliet West High School, Sherman went on to devote his career to Material Service, where he ultimately retired as a distinguished member of the management team. He was known not only for his skill and leadership, but also for his sharp wit and humor.
Serving his country honorably, Sherman was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, having received numerous commendations including the National Defense Service Medal (NDSM), Vietnam Service Medal (VSM), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (RVCM), Air Force Good Conduct Medal (AFGCM), and AFM900-3. His time in service reflected his steadfast dedication and loyalty-qualities that remained with him throughout his life.
Sherman had a natural talent for working with his hands, and his passion for woodworking and fixing things was well known among family and friends. Whether he was building something with precision or simply tinkering for fun, Sherman's handiwork left a lasting impression. He was a longtime board member with the NHRA Bristol Dragway Fan Advisory Board, further testament to his lifetime affection for drag racing. Camping with friends at the races, golfing, or hunting-Sherman truly loved any opportunity to be outdoors.
Sherman is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Lynn Carol (nee Booker) Capps; his cherished daughters, Jennifer Capps and Nickole (Ray) Lynch; and his adored grandchildren, Kaylynn, Zachary, Nicholas, and Gabriella Ramirez. He also leaves behind his brother, Denzil Ray (Alice) Capps, II; sister, Theresa (Ken) Jones; brother-in-law, Duane Booker; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and many others whose lives he touched. Sherman also held dear his three close friends Robin Wicevic and Rick and Shane Bulian, with whom he shared many adventures and unforgettable memories.
He is preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Florence (Don) Irwin; brother-in-law, Tom Booker; and many other treasured friends. Though his absence leaves a profound void, his memory will live on through the warmth of his laughter, his generous spirit, and the many stories that defined his life as a fun-loving, "center-of-attention" kind of guy.
Visitation for Sherman Lee Capps will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet, IL, from 8:30 a.m. until dismissal at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with full military honors held under the auspices of the United States Air Force, the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad, and the Illinois Patriot Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you raise a glass and have a beer in his honor!
