Sherman Joseph LaVallie passed away on June18, 2025 at Benefis Hospital in Great Falls MT due to a long illness. A wake will be held June 22, 2025 at the Red Whip Gym beginning at 5 pm with Services on June 23, 2025 at 11 am. Burial at mission cemetery by his mother, father, and sister.
Sherman was born on October 3, 1958 to George LaVallie and Helen Whitecow Talks Different at Fort Belknap Agency, along with two sisters and one brother. In 1960 Helen married Alvin "Cubby" Talks Different and was blessed with 9 children. They relocated to Hays MT to continue to raise their 11 children and moved to the Agency area later on.
Sherman met Roberta Longknife in 1987. Through their union, 5 children were born, Sherman LaVallie, Jr., Sherm George LaVallie, Shay Edward LaVallie, Shanell Mable LaVallie, and Sherann Joy LaVallie, all of Great Falls MT.
Sherman was a strong individual and he took pride in firefighting for approximately 15 years of his life. He was a squad boss then he moved on to Crew boss. He was very qualified to fight fire and take on any position he had to. He was a true outdoor person and he was a "jack" of all trades. He enjoyed attending powwows with his wife and father in Law. He sundanced for his children and family; his commitment to the Creator was fulfilled. Berta and he enjoyed going out and picking sage for many people. They both knew where the good patches were, they took their guidance from Creator when finding sage. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed watching movies and eating his popcorn/snacks with his wife. Sherman loved his children, he always did.
Sherman is survived by his wife Roberta Longknife, sons: Sherman LaVallie, Jr., Sherm George LaVallie, Shay Edward LaVallie, daughters, Shanell Mable LaVallie, and Sherann Joy LaVallie all of Great Falls MT. Sisters Joan (Stan) Johnson, Lena (Dan) Horn, Ester (Byard) Lamebull, all of Fort Belknap. Brothers Edward (Lori) Whitecow of Havre MT, Alvin (Alrite) Talks Different of Ethete WY, Ralph (missy) Talks Different Fort Belknap, Ira Talks Different Harlem MT, Virgil Talks Different Fort Belknap, Gene Talks Different Fort Belknap, adopted brother Dan Stiffarm Missoula MT. Aunts Catherine Longknife and Mary Whitecow of Hays MT, Barbara Longknife, Ramona Messerly Hays MT and Caroline Brown Harlem MT.
He was preceded in death by his parents Helen Whitecow Talksdifferent, George LaVallie, Alvin Talks Different (step dad), sisters Carol "Puddy" LaVallie and Georgia Lee "Crysie" LaVallie. His paternal grandparents Bob and Estelle Mount, maternal grandparents Joseph and Josephine (Bracklet) Whitecow and numerous relatives who have passed on.
Sherman has a huge family from Whitecow, Mount, Brisbo, Bushyhead, LaVallie, Talks Different. If we missed anyone it was not our intentions.
