Mr. Sherrill Gregory Haney, 83, won his last race on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. He was born October 28, 1939 to the late William Wall Haney and Faye Edwards Haney. Sherrill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a Godly man and was a lifetime member of Centerview Baptist Church.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, October 13, 2023 at Holland Funeral Service, 806 Circle Drive, Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.
Sherrill was a dedicated husband who loved his wife, Barbara. He carried his favorite photo of her in his wallet, and would not miss an opportunity to pull it out and show off her beauty. He looked forward to the Haney/Edwards Family Reunions and enjoyed having big dinners with his family. He loved spending time at the family beach house with his siblings where they would play card games in the evenings and sometimes through the entire night. Because of the competitiveness between the siblings, there would always be a declared winner of each game played.
Among many things, Sherrill cherished every moment he was able to spend with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren including going to their ball games and playing with them in the yard. Sherrill was a competitive athlete his entire life and was well known for his basketball achievements with Marshville High School. Additionally, he became the Union County Horseshoe Champion in the early 70's. Above all other sport, his favorite was racing with his brother, Ned, and son, Greg. Sherrill and Ned were not only brothers, they were racing partners and best friends. Always trying to outrun each other, but always having each others back. After retiring from racing he went on to become the track manager of the Lancaster Motor Speedway. With the support of his loving wife and biggest fan, Barbara, he was inducted into the Lancaster Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in June of 2023. He was an avid North Carolina Tar Heels and Dodgers fan. He looked forward to watching sports on tv; he would say, "Anything you could hit, bounce, or throw." He was always proud that his first grandson, Matthew, was born the day Pete Rose broke the record for most hits.
Our family rests easy knowing that he has received his final checkered flag and has been reunited with his family in heaven.
In addition to his parents, Sherrill is preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Haney and Ned Haney; father and mother-in-law, Bryce and Jeanette Whitley; sister-in-laws, Betty Haney, Betty Whitley and Raymelle Threadgill; brother-in-laws Bryce Whitley Jr., William Edwards, Jimmy Mangum, and Olin Threadgill.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara Whitley Haney, children, Greg Haney (Donna), Lori Haney Laney (Scott), and Sherry Walden (Chris); grandchildren, Matthew Bryce Haney, Whitley Hargett (Greg),Ally Rushing (Matthew), Addison Laney, and Scout McFalls (Ariel); great-grandchildren, Bailey Hargett, Beau Hargett, Boone Pie Hargett, Brighton Hargett, Rylan Rushing, Campbell Rushing, and Beckham McFalls; sisters, Nancy Mangum, and Hilda Edwards; sister-in-law, Joyce Downes (Terry); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to youth or the building and grounds of Centerview Baptist Church in Marshville, NC.
