Sherryl Collins Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 23, 2025.
Anita (Nita) Griffin Collins, 69, of Monticello, Florida, entered into eternal rest on September 21, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on September 30, 1955, in Thomasville, GA., but grew up in Monticello (Jefferson County), Florida, and was a lifelong Floridian whose passion for family history connected generations. Her remarkable talent for genealogy allowed her to trace family trees to the smallest branch, often leading to surprising and notable discoveries. She shared these findings with equal parts enthusiasm and humor, delighting in both the celebrated branches and the occasional "sprouts" better left untraced.

Nita's early years were filled with music and school spirit. She graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1973, where she played in the JCHS Marching Band and performed as a majorette. She pursued higher education at North Florida Junior College (now North Florida College) and earned her degree from Valdosta State College. Over the years, Nita used her music talent by playing the piano and organ for many different churches in the North Florida and South Georgia area.

She married Douglas (Doug) Collins in 1976, and off they went on their adventures in the United States Air Force. Upon their return to Monticello, together they built a home centered on faith, laughter, and unconditional love. When Doug passed away at the young age of 39, Nita courageously raised their sons, Danny and Clint, as a single mother.

Her strength, resourcefulness, and devotion shaped not only their lives, but also the lives of her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and all who knew her. Family was the heartbeat of Nita's world. She was a proud grandmother to her three granddaughters--Peyton, Adelyn, and Harper--filling their lives with stories, traditions, and love. She was also a devoted sister, a loyal friend, and a cherished part of her community.

Nita was preceded in death by her husband, Doug Collins; her parents, Louis "Pete" Griffin and Mary Elizabeth "Billie" Griffin. She also leaves behind her sons, Danny Collins and Clint Collins (Amber); her granddaughters, Peyton, Adelyn, and Harper; her brothers Wayne Griffin (Kathy) of Monticello, and Ray Griffin (Susanne) of Madison; her long-time companion David Sculley of Thomas County, Georgia; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She is also lovingly remembered by her childhood friends and devoted caregivers Teresa Wheeler Hamrick, Beth Hamilton Burch, and Carrie Ervin Tellesfen, whose care and presence brought comfort and joy in her final season of life. Many thanks are also extended to her daytime caregivers, Andrea Vickers and Peggy Watkins, for their kindness and care. Her life was a testament of resilience, love, and the importance of knowing where--and who--you come from. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched and in the history she preserved.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 11:00 at Christ Church in Monticello, FL. with Reverend Joe Boyles officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning one hour prior to the service. A private family interment service will follow after the service and a lunch served at the church.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Thomasville Historical Society or to Big Bend Hospice.
