Shirley worked several jobs throughout her life, including working as a car hop at Big Ben Drive-In in St. Joseph, while several of her daughters were babies. She most recently worked as a check-in clerk at Sanitary Cleaners.
Although Shirley was a mom to her six daughters, she was also considered a "Mom" to many others. Shirley and her daughters have taken annual mother–daughter trips together for the past 30 years and Shirley was always very proud to point out to anyone that "all these girls are mine." One of her favorite past-times was going to flea markets and antique shops. She was always looking for the perfect collectible shoe to add to her collection.
Shirley is survived by her loving daughters: Diane (David) Rauhoff, Debra (Scott) Taylor, Cindy Hildebrandt, Sandra (Donald) Hutchinson, Sue Layman, Tamara Cooper; grandchildren: Jason (Tui) Rauhoff, Tonya (Patrick) McDaniel, Ceanne (Adam) Wienner, Seth Taylor, Kera Hildebrandt, Angela Layman, Tori Cooper; great-grandchildren: Lucas Rauhoff, Jensen Sassone, Hailey Sassone, Audrey McDaniel, Gavin McDaniel, Jacob Wienner, Nathan Wienner, Elliot Wienner; and brother, Alfred (Candy) Thornton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred E. Berg; longtime companion, Charles Kroening; grandson, Evan Layman; and sons-in-law: James Hildebrandt, Donald Layman Jr., and Thomas Cooper.
