Shirley Elder Obituary

"Well done, good and faithful servant." - Matthew 25:23 Her kindness was her ministry.
In Loving Memory of Shirley May Elder "Aunt Shirley" May 9, 1938 - October 31, 2025
Born on May 9, 1938, at Philadelphia General Hospital, Shirley May Elder-affectionately known as "Aunt Shirley"-entered the world weighing under three pounds, with a "veil" over her face. Her family always said it was a sign she would lead a special and blessed life. Shirley began her career with Bell Telephone in 1956, where she worked faithfully until her retirement in 1992. Over her many years there, she held a variety of positions, made countless friends, and traveled the world-creating cherished memories she continued to share throughout her life.
In 1985, Shirley moved to Friendly Village in Williamstown, New Jersey, where she became an active and beloved member of the Women's Club. One of her favorite events to plan was the annual St. Patrick's Day Party, which she always made joyful and full of spirit. In 2004, Shirley moved to Heather Ridge Apartments in Mantua, New Jersey, to be closer to her family. She lived independently there and treasured the company of her dear friend Denise, who visited regularly-often bringing her meals and spending time watching old stories on MeTV, or enjoying Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune together.
She was also a proud Red Hat Lady, known for her love of hats-wearing her straw hat in the summer and her favorite leopard-print hat when the weather turned cold.
Aunt Shirley was the embodiment of kindness, faith, and generosity. She was a godly, loving, and positive soul who found joy in giving to others. She loved shopping for family and friends at Kohl's and Boscov's, sipping her favorite McDonald's iced coffee, and enjoying dinners at Captain Cat's.
If you ever needed a prayer, Aunt Shirley was the one to call. Her faith never wavered, and she always reminded everyone that "tomorrow will be a better day." Her simple words carried deep wisdom: "Be kind to everyone. Pray more and worry less."
Shirley is survived by her niece, godchild, guardian angel, and best friend Karen Pino (Stephen); their sons Stephen Jr., Gabriel and Nathaniel of Deptford, NJ; and her nephew Edward Elder Jr. (Barbara) and their children E.J. and Katie of Bear, Delaware. She was predeceased by her beloved sister Joan and brother Ed.
The family asks that you honor Aunt Shirley's memory by showing kindness to others-because, as she always said, "The world would be a better place if more people were kind to one another because kindness doesn't cost you a penny."
